I had a classmate recently say she was going to have her dad buy her a new computer. She was thinking Apple, and she mentioned she was getting the Air. Now I've never used a Mac Laptop, but I do know that for a $1700 machine, the Air's best quality is that it's really thin. But it was shiny, and she wasn't paying for it, so...

The Air is a flimsy piece of junk. I'd rather lug around a five year old Toshiba than that thing (the Toshiba would probably have better specs too). My dad got a top of the range Air 6 months ago, 80GB HDD, ONE USB port, no disc drive of any sort, all other peripherals have to be bought separately. It's a complete waste of money.

The Air competes with the $999 Macbook model for specs, so I'm not really sure who it's designed for. People who really care about their laptop being thin I guess. An $800 premium on a laptop with a lower end processor, fewer USB ports, and no optical drive. They even have the same screen size.

The mac pro uses a modular mb. If you get a single cpu version, there is no 'drop a second cpu in' since there isn't a second socket.  You have to buy it with two cpus to get the add on board with the second socket and 4 more dimms.
They did it because good dual socket workstation boards cost a shitload and cutting out the triple channel memory option and second socket wod cut their costs dramatically without necessitating a price drop since they still can claim the use of Xeon cpus.
A real dual socket Xeon i7 workstation would absolutely rape the shit mac pro.
