I see you can get it direct from crucial, I usually don't order direct from the crucial - actually, I didn't know you could order direct from them.  I wonder tho why I couldn't find more ecc ddr3 memory elsewhere...

Nobody's really using it.  Most Intel servers are FBDIMM, and the very few applications for ECC DDR3 have been dominated by very large OEMs, so it's probably on allocation from most suppliers, as the OEMs gear up for a transition to DDR3.

I wish they would release a new SDK for the iPhone.  One for Winblows.

I don't want to get a mac.

Highly, highly unlikely. Why? Because the iPhone uses a miniaturized version of desktop Mac OS X and thus programs developed for it use a slightly modified version of Obj-C/Cocoa (what most Mac apps are written with), which has been Mac-only ever since before Apple adopted the aqua interface into the OS X developer betas (somewhere around late 1998/1999).

Huh?  What are you smoking?

It's highly unlikely for a different reason:

iPhone is a goldmine.  A Mac is a paperweight/status symbol/idiot computer (do they still have one mouse button?   My mouse has 8 buttons - and scrolling - and that's not enough. Mx518 - 8 buttons + scroll. )

If I really want to dev for iPhone - I guess I might be forced to buy a Mac - for just that reason, and only that reason.

Nothing.

My point is because the iPhone SDK shares a lot of stuff with the standard Mac one, they'd pretty much have to port Cocoa and the OS X SDK to Windows as well.

And umm, Macs have come standard with multibutton mice for several years now, and it's not like you can't pick up a $15 Logitech mouse and plug it in. Hell, your Mx518 would work perfectly. I personally use a 4-button Logitech trackball with mine.

As iindigo said, since the iPhone runs OS X it shares lots of the same developer tools. Apple would have to port their entire XCode developer suite to windows to make the iPhone SDK for windows. I don't see that happening, when its much easier to tell people to get a mac.

Ignorance is Windows.
Get smart, buy a Mac, and never turn back.

ZOMG you got the lion king's wife as your icon.

Why?

Anyways Mac would be great@geoffreak if only it weren't over-priced faulty hardware that dies after 2 years of use.

Maybe you should tell all my IT friends that they have been going down the wrong path and have been totally blinded by their 4 years of intense computer training. ;)

I don't see that happening, when its much easier to tell people to get a mac.

I will never abandon the PC for such a superficial reason.

Why are you people falling for Apple's marketing ploy?

Apple is gay and will remain gay in the Computer Industry until the day they die.

They have the portable mp3 market. What else do they need? Just give up, Jobs' successor will never beat Gates' entourage of google-esque geniuses. Now they have resorted to bundle pricing and the old peanut gallery trick not to mention gibber goober-gabber gayness galore. (Aka "The 5 G's of Gay:) among the uber-l33t techie crowd.)

*sighs*

Well you can't say that all Macs are universally faulty and fail easily - I personally have one from 1993 that's still running like new :P In addition to that, I have 3 or 4 other post-2000 Macs that have all been under extremely heavy use and still work fine to this day. It's not uncommon for design studios and the like to be using PowerMac towers that are several years out of date.

In other words, they're generally pretty durable, but there's a few lemons in each batch.

Also, if you ask me, any IT guys that want to ensure they have a future should reach outside of their MSCE certification and become capable of maintaining *NIX machines. Windows might not be king in the corporate ring forever.

At my college they require students to take classes on Linux. Since a growing number of businesses are already abandoning Windows Server in favor of Linux solutions like Red hat and SUSE.

Macs before the sealed batteries were fine for durability.  Now I wouldn't touch an Apple notebook.  For a long time I wanted a G4 iBook as a transport for my DAC due to its silent, fanless design.

Fanless??? I have a iBook G4 and it most certainly has a LOUD fan. Sounds like a jet engine when it comes on. Very annoying.

If by "sealed battery" you mean the battery being inside the case and unremovable, only the 17" Macbook Pro does that, and it gains around 4-5 extra hours of operating time by doing so. The rest still have removable, replaceable batteries.

iindigo, The MacBook Air also has a unremovable battery.

Ahh yeah, I forgot about that. For some reason, my mind refuses to classify it as part of the Macbook line and casts it off as its own entity.

For some reason I was associating it with the new macbooks, and assumed that only the 15" pro had a user replaceable battery.  Still annoying that the battery is internal(no extended battery), but not nearly as bad as unreplaceable.

On the subject of the G4 iBook.  It was the only laptop I've come across that ran without its fan under light to moderate load.  I've only been around one, at high end audio convention, so it might have been modified.

The newer models are considerably quieter than the old G4 iBooks. I use to have a 1Ghz 12" iBook, and when I compare it to the 15" Macbook Pro my friend bought in early 2008, his beats the iBook extremely easily. The only time you even really notice the fan is if you open a game like WoW or start compressing/encoding stuff.

I agree with the college students being required to take Linux,

One of my friends who is a Computer Science major was even a former Linux fan. But to date I haven't found one computer oriented major who even acknowledges Apple's existence when it comes to real computing.

Granted it would be in their best interest to have Windows continue, if Mac actually had potential (like linux) I am sure they would at least hint at the fact that it may be a good alternative in the future to Windows OS. But the only alternative ever seriously discussed in their circles is Linux. Mac is never even a conversation topic.

Artsy farts are all over Mac of course, but maybe you are right about the lemon comment. But the thing is I am never willing to switch to Mac simply because it's too expensive, tech-support is god knows how much more expensive and they always try bundle pricing their software which is not only gay but mega-sonic gay.

Does Mac have good compatibility with shareware and freeware?

The $2000 airport cafe idler market seemed so viable too.

On a more serious note, I've been looking somewhat at getting a new computer, probably next semester, to replace my dying windows machine. I probably don't do enough specific things (besides certain emulators) that Windows has that Mac doesn't, but one thing in particular really seems to be a huge hurdle: the cost. I'm not sure how anyone manages to justify the cost of a Mac Mini to themselves, but I'm not sure the alternatives are really all that much better.

I've been a Windows user since the Pentium 1 line, but before we had a PC in the house (well, besides the Commodore 64) I was using Macs in elementary school. I'm not against them in principle, and I don't think I could honestly convince myself that I'm missing out a ton on exclusive apps (plus the option of Boot Camping Windows always remains) but it eventually comes back to price. What makes a Mac worth that huge investment?

I know they are quieter, but current funds don't allow me to purchase a MacBook  :-[

Im a Networking Major, and even my instructors acknowledge Apple's (growing) existence in the market. In fact there is even several Macs in the Labs that are used to demonstrate the topics on. We are taught on all three platforms, including the Mac.

For me, it comes down to the OS. Yes, it does make a difference, despite what some naysayers might say. At least for me, the Mac workflow and UI feels much more natural and flowing. It never gets in my way and is always faithfully waiting for my next command. So while I might be able to buy a Dell with or build my own rig with specs that are similar or better than a Mac in the same bracket, it doesn't necessarily mean I'll get more out of it since using Windows (or even Linux) will slow me down instead.

Yes, sometimes the integration between Mac hardware and OS X is nice, but if Apple officially supported running OS X on a generic PC, I'd probably do that instead.

Does Mac have good compatibility with shareware and freeware?

http://www.macupdate.com/
Thousands and thousands of freeware and shareware apps for Mac OS X. Take your pick.
