If you want something long to keep people at bay and is fast, I recommend either penetrator, or the winged spear. Both are pretty decent 1 handed too and aren't bad choices to use two handed.

Yeah I always mix up the normal vs soul versions' names.

Nikran:
people who know what there doing will dodge a greatswords running R1 attack (The best attack on a great sword) or wait for u to swing and get behind and backstab. Still a good weapon, but I'd always pair it with another weapon to make up for it's weakness's.

if your a mage char my personal weapon picks would be......Moon mirdan hammer with it's hard to dodge swings and increadbly cheap R1 spam. Or a Crescent flamberge which has nice large radius swings. Lastly a Uchigatana (Either moon or Crescent).

Sorry but the Penetrating Sword is garbage. It requires colourless demons souls to upgrade, but it's attack of 90 doesn't improve all the way up to +5. it's modifiers are an E in strength and an A in dex at +5 (not useless but only a dex build could make an use of it). And ofc it's only good attack is the R2 stab which would be pretty easy to dodge in pvp, not to mention the fact that everyone would know thats the only attack someone weilding one is going to use all the time.

Have you actually used the penetrator? You don't have to upgrade it, just use it stock. Unlike the super stupid swings of the penetrator boss, the swings while you use it are not as wide inaccurate. Not to mention, you can swing the sword a hell of a lot faster than what the boss actually does. R1 will make a low sweep which afaik, you can't roll forward to get to me the user. Tapping multiple R1s quickly while using it, your char will make 1 sweep then do a quick slice that goes from the feet to the chest (which reminds me of the katana to a certain extent) but it knocks the person back.

I will agree that this sword is not very useful for killing people. But the way that the mechanics work, it's a good sword with long range and fast speed that's useful in holding people back while you pop a quick spice or grass.

I considered that point as well. My mage uses both uchigatana and penetrator (main reason for penetrator is for the increased points which allow me not to require fixing my weapon frequently like the uchigatana) for PVM. But I have used it for PVP before. Not much damage, but it does hold most non-melee chars back. Mainly, those who don't want to get hit by any weapon of sorts. You're not going to kill really anyone with the penetrator, but it is decent deterrent.

I recommend the spear for approximately the same reason. But I will have to disagree on the halberd. When held 1 handed, it's somewhat slow and clumsy. Not to mention you get "stunned" longer if you smack a wall with that thing. Halberd is amazing 2 handed, but when used 1 handed, it does have some flaws that can be your downfall. (Not to mention I feel it's not fast enough even with superior sweep). It's about balance. If I wanted speed and distance, I could always say Epee. Speed? The daggers are fast and you can roll and attack with no delay. Wide sweep? There's a lot, many are slow, not many are fast. etc.

People are always going to dodge. Whether it's dodging backwards to stay away from sweeps, to rolling around in circles for whatever reason. But the point of having a weapon like this (based on what AoG was asking) is mainly to keep the enemy at bay. You shouldn't really be slapping R1 continually to kill them. R1 once and roll away if they try to roll AT you. Otherwise, just quickly attack and get away.
