You guys would NOT believe the engrish track for Gall Force: Eternal Story. I swear sometimes it makes no sense, but I think its rather unique. I have never come across another English track in any other Anime, where it appears they used English speaking Japanese voice actors ( I know Robotech Remastered used Minmay's but she at least sounds decent) . Either that, or these people did speak English and were forced to read from a HORRIBLE translation.

Thank god the series was redubbed for its DVD release.

I usually only watch dub, simply because I'm lazy and don't like to have to actually engage with my entertainment.

I think the standout overalls would be Vampire Hunter D, Bloodlust, Berserk, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, and Hellsing (not the voice actor's fault the director tossed the manga aside.)

I find that most dubs have a mix of good-to-great dubbed characters and the rest suck. Whether it be because casting fell through or somebody only got work because they know someone or what, I can always find some characters I love and some I hate.

Elfen Lied: I thought the voice of Lucy was perfect, especially her schitzophrenia, but I wanted to hit mute every time Kohta started becoming emotional or any time Nana opened her mouth.

DBZ - there are no "okay" characters in the English dub, they're either great (Goku, Cell, Vegetta) or useless (Freeza, Bulma, Krillian, Master Roshi)

It seems to me that dubbing has gotten worse over time. Its like these companies realize that most fans prefer subbed over dubbed and have just stopped trying. Nearly all the series on the "Best Dub" list are at lest 5 years old.

My vote for best would go to Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop and Rurouni Kenshin.

Middle of the road would be FullMetal Alchemist, Rune Solider and Fruits Basket.

Worst... Naruto

Even though I prefer subbed, I'll switch over to the dubbed track if I'm curious on how they translated a certain part.

Cowboy Bebop is definitely number 1 in my mind.

I will say, any series that has been dubbed and includes a little girl usually has a HORRIBLE dub for that little girl. It's maddening!

Also, when I saw best/worst dub, what popped into my mind right away was a video game, Star Ocean Till the end of Time. Those two subordinates of Nel sounded like they inhaled a balloon full of helium and took an overdose of valium. I muted the television whenever they talked.

Best I would say Full Metal alchemist. A lot of terrible voices exist in the series, but I think the good voice actors are used more.

Worst is Code Geass and Death Note. Absolutely terrible, monotone, like the actors aren't even trying. I have had to turn the channel away from cartoon network a few times when these shows come on because they hurt to watch. Johnny Bosh is the only decent voice actor in Code Geass, but he is WAAAAAAAY over used as a main character voice.

I can't completely agree with that. Older shows and dubs are more likely to be named because those are what more people have seen, especially if they were shown on TV. Over the past few years, there have been plenty of good dubs. I'm guessing that not so many around here have seen shows like Magikano, Nerima Daikon Brothers, Solty Rei, Basilisk, Beck, Trinity Blood, Desert Punk, Air, Kanon '06, FMP TSR, and Ouran ~~Koukou~~ High School Host Club. Sure, maybe nothing's come along to equal Cowboy Bebop, but I'd say the average has gone up. And fwiw, what little I've heard of recent TV dubs like Bleach, Naruto, Death Note, and Code Geass has been okay in my book.

Best for me is what I'm currently watching: xxxHOLic.

Worst is probably Azumanga Daioh. There's just so much lost in the translating it to English in the first place, but put on top of that a character from Osaka with a southern accent. -facepalm-

Thats true, Beck, Desert Punk and FMP were pretty good for dubs. But I guess they sort of fell into the middle of the road for me. Haven't heard the Code Geass dub yet, but I haven't heard anything bad about it.

Part of the problem I think is that most of us hear the original Japanese actors first, so thats how we figure that character should sound. In English, it just sounds a little off. I'm sure I'm being pretty picky about it all as well.

I haven't really seen much dubbed anime and the animes I did watch in english I haven't rewatched in japanese simply because I don't really like rewatching anime that much.
So I don't really have much ground to compare, but I can atleast say if I enjoyed the animes of which I did watch the dubbed versions:

The melancholy of haruhi suzumiya:
One of the first 'real' animes I've watched, it was one of the animes that got me into the entire anime scene.
When I started out I wanted english versions 'no matter what'... yeah I was one of those pathetic guys

Anyway regarding the Haruhi dub I can really only say this:
Haruhi's english voice was really cheerfully and pushy and it fitted her character perfectly but..
Kyon's voice was what I liked the most! His intonation and the way he talked just fitted his sarcastic character so perfectly it's part of the reason why I like this anime soooo much.
I think its good that I watched the english dub for Haruhi (I downloaded the dual-audio version anyway) because back in those days I didn't really know any Japanese anyway
so I think it would be hard for me to really 'enjoy' the sarcastic nature of the Japanese Kyon, but english I knew very well so I could easily enjoy that.
As stated before I haven't watched the Japanese version so I don't know how that works out but I can sure say that atleast (in my humble opinion) the English dub is atleas worth watching for people
that are new to anime and/or aren't really into the whole 'japanese language' thing (even though I now admit it's a big part of what I love about anime)

Gundam Wing:
I said Haruhi was the first 'real' anime I've seen.. but I watched Gundam Wing when I was ~16 or something years old and I watched it on TV.
Naturally it was the english version that they aired (with dutch subtitles) But I really loved the anime for its 'deeper meaning' and all its psychological talk.
Overall I enjoyed the anime a lot, and I think the voices fitted the 'darker' and emo-ish outlook that the anime portrayed quite well.
Naturally I haven't seen the original japanese version so I don't know about those voices but I can atleast say I enjoyed the english voice cast a lot and
I can't really remember a point in time where I felt the voices were out of place or something like that.

There are some other animes I did watch in english but those are mainly 'main stream' animes that made it big in the western world anyway (think DBZ, Yu-Gi-Oh, Digimon, Pokémon etc).
So there's not really much sense in giving my opinion about those dubs because EVERYBODY knows how those dubs are like and a lot of you people here have probably seen those sort of series
yourself on tv while you were young.

EVA and Bleach have bad Dub's and for good dubs most of ADV are good.

I'm watching Kazemakase Tsukikage Ran again, with English audio this time, and the combination of Mona Marshall and Michelle Ruff is pretty damn good.

Best dub
I have to give another vote to the original Ghost in the Shell movie.
I watched it when I was 13 years old or something like that, and I thought it was a really good movie. I never thought about it as anime.

Years later I watched it again and this time I actually understood the plot.

The story and dubbing was so good that you didn't even care about the gratuitous nudity.

It's different with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, because everything is more colorful, anime-like, and Major Kusanagi looks like a teenage girl.
