The good ole 30D as a main camera.  I want a new one, but I wasn't impressed with the 7D, and the 50D eats batteries.  I'm waiting on the next generation.  Hopefully they will put out a 60D with SD and a new battery format.  But with the new 7D out, i highly doubt it.

30D is the mid-range model, IIRC?  Regardless, if I have to replace my 300D, I'll be looking to up to a mid-range.

I would probably wait another 6-8 months.  I haven't been impressed with the 50D and though I am impressed with the 7D and when I shot the camera it felt really natural, I just want to get away from CF cards.  They are not as prevalent as they use to be.  Everything is going SD.  And I want a good Midrange Canon with an SD slot.  Or a Dual SD/CF slot like the new Nikon.

:D

How'd I miss this?

I'd take the Canon.   Camera mfg usually has superior products than electronics mfg.   Why?  Because they have a name to protect.

D40x is by all means a great camera.  If you have no old lenses laying around - and are jumping in, it's a great  buy.

I like the 18-200 lens - as for affording it - it's one of the cheapest real lenses out there ( uh, I'm talking $250-300 ).   IF you can't afford it - try getting a whitebox from B&H.   We broke our last 18-200, and bought a replacement.   The options were --- buy a THIRD one ( heh, broke 2 ) --- or just try a whitebox.

We took the whitebox.

It's perfect.

www.bhphotovideo.co m  [ big lesson - buying pro camera equipment online or by mail - always ALWAYS buy from a reputable dealer.  Even if you're looking for imports, even if buying used.   Never, ever, ever buy from Brooklyn, NY.   B&H, Adorama, 42nd St Photo - if getting gear from NYC - if it's not from New York, NY (*Manhattan*) - don't buy.

Nothing.

Alright, guys. I'm not a camera freak like most of you. I just need a digital camera and I got one that people recommended to me. Misa also told me it's a good digital camera.  :P Lets all get naked and hug each other in the shower, tonight!

If you want just a good point and shoot, My top choices are the Canon 780 and the Sony W230.  Both of them are reasonablely priced and have a lot of nice easy to use features built in.  Grab you a Memory card, an extra battery and a Case and you are off the to the races.

Hopefully, it'll be longer than that.  I really hate to spend that money right now unless I have to.

I swear I was in a thread similar to this. I used the Sony T series which has a metal body instead of plastic. I REALLY REALLY prefer this over the plastic Canons and others. Canon isn't bad per se, but I hate the plastic body which is very prone to scratches or having the color rubbed off (from within a bag or something).

Point and shoot.
Size really isn't a problem. I don't stuff that thing in a pocket (well, I do with my T but not others due to compression of plastic casing = bad) so I don't care as long as it's not huge. (grab a backpack or something anyways).
Casing is the big one. I HATE plastic camera casings due to it being too light and its durability. (I want to feel like I have something in my hands and not "nothing" in my hands. I hate that feeling. Makes me more prone to drop it or break it.
Weight. Light is good, but not too light. I prefer having something with good weight (like a metal built case/camera box)
Megapixels. Too little is a problem, but not horribly bad. Too much isn't good since you get high size pics (which you don't want/need) and you turn it down, but the sensors are good, so they pick up artifacts (like dust) easily. I've toyed around to fall into a happy balance at around 5-7MP. (I would believe FB pics are usually around 2-3 MP)

i'm pretty sure the body of the Canon Power Shot SD780 IS / Ixus 100 IS (same camera different name, dunno why) is made of metal - at least mine is. and with ~100g weight the camera has an excellent handling + looks simply gorgeous.

the reason why pictures shot with "more then 6 megapixel" - cameras don't look any better is because the sensors used in compact cameras have to stay small (the sensors of DSLRs are around 8-10 times the size)  - thus the incoming light is simply divided into smaller portions which reduces sensitivity and increases noise. a supposedly higher grade sensor could only achieve a better image quality under the condition that it would be accompanied by higher grade lenses, which again are to big.

the problem i have with sony cameras is that you are still stuck with Memory Sticks - the whole world is using SD Cards which you can literary by at the gas station but sony keeps using its "superior" format.

I don't mind the memory stick. I just have to buy once and not really care. Technology drops so much all the time, why care about an extra 5-25 bucks here and there? I just buy a new stick of MSPD or SD(regular/micro etc usually high speed) when I get new technology anyways.

I recall paying 250 bucks for a 2GB high speed MSPD when the PSP was first released. (I got a gen 1) I still use that thing. xD I only recently spent a little to go from 4GB for my camera (high speed again, great for viewing pics in display... useless for just raw camera picture taking) I didn't have to upgrade, since it takes quite a bit for me to fill up 2GB with @ 5MP or 7MP but I just decided to drop a little bit. The old 2GB is currently being "readyboost" fodder for my laptop.

But then again, I just don't really give a shit. :P I just buy whatever fits my needs and wants the best. It just so happened that my camera was Sony. (Not many metal casing cameras when I was looking, mainly just plastic ones) and same with my laptop. I was looking at Toshiba, got pissed, almost bought a HP till I saw the reports on the 8200/8400 nVidias, HATED Dell, no good acers, many Crappy Sonys... but I found a nice Sony one for a decent price.

I don't defend Sony's pricing, but I do admit that they sometimes have things with certain characteristics that appeal to me that don't appear in other brands. (My carbon fibre laptop or back in the day, a nicely weighted P&S with no external lens etc.)

if he went through with what he decided on the last page, he got the Canon IXUS 95 IS | PowerShot SD1200 IS | IXY 110 IS (depending on where you bought it the name's different ~.~)
