Too Much Fanservice?

Two words to describe retarded fan service:-

Code Geass.

Nothing pissed me off more then wasting time with the dumb fan service ep, especially the one near the end where everyone was chasing Lelouch i think and Knight of round girl came charging after him with her Knightmare. Wtf? It's a fucking war machine that someones using to grab Lelouch to win a prize? Code Geass would have us believe that it's a super intelligent anime, but i can't respect it at all when it goes superhuman stupid with the fanservice eps. Should have used that time to develope the story further, not to waste time with utter crap.

I'm gonna have to agree with you on this one for a bit, I think that fanservice should have been made into a separate "special episode: fanservice" like other anime I know about. Season 2 did loose some momentum. Season 1 was so much better.

In most other animes, they're simply pandering scenes or episodes. They're base filler content. Most of my favorite shows have solid foundations to build off, and I can't think of one that revolves around or relies upon fan-service (excepting again, Lucky Star) to make it great. It's hard to aspire to greatness with panty shots and topless onsen sequences. They're by nature filling in for weak writing.

Well said. I completely agree. Fan service should be left to series and characters that can handle and support it. It's completely wasted otherwise.

On the opposite side of that, serious and thoughtful storylines should be left to characters and series that can support them. I don't know how many times I've been enjoying a fun, lighthearted show with a lot of fanservice, only to be reminded, "Oh wait? There's actually a plot going on here?" Stuff like Maburaho, DearS, Yumeria, Magikano, the whole Familiar of Zero franchise, They are My Noble Masters... I didn't invent the "Story detracting from fanservice" tag on AniDB for nothing, after all.

That's also a valid point. With very few exceptions, I prefer my series to remain true to what they are, and not switch halfway through. Both Chobits and Ikkitousen fell victim to that. If they chose one or the other, they would've been great... but by switching halfway though, it really hurt them overall.
