Hm. That's a very good question. I'd think not... but I guess that can be up to debate. Example, I believe that Kimi ga Nozomu Eien and Elfen Lied have practically no fanservice whatsoever, regardless of how much skin is shown in them. I don't believe the nudity in either of them is meant to turn you on, it's just part of the show. Whereas Mahoromatic is FULL of fanservice.

I think inevitably fan service can be defined as "unnecessary" content, invariably for the purpose of pleasing fans. Nudity in and of itself is not fan service, but a beach or onsen scene in an anime that would otherwise have little or nothing to do with it would be, even if they involved no nudity.

As for dramatic fan service, I think the two would be mutually exclusive goals. I don't see how you would reasonably go about creating a "good" dramatic moment that is unnecessary for the plot, while also pleasing fans. It would be like creating filler content not because you overshot the manga, but to create a dramatic scene that had no relevance to anything else. It could probably be done but it would require an absurdest attitude to pull it off. Like dropping a short film into the middle of an anime that had nothing to do with the short film's subject.

It could work in an episodic anime, I think. I agree that it would difficult to pull off in an anime with a rolling storyline, though.

Yes, that does make sense. So in other words, dramatic fanservice is unlikely to ever exist without seeming completely out of place.

I'm not sure it would help. If the "fan-service" episode was completely unrelated, it'd still be absurd. If it were related, then it would be difficult to point to it as unnecessary. Consider an anime like Master Keaton. Your understanding of the show as a whole doesn't rely on any particular situation, but seeing Keaton in action in any given episode is a microcosm of the entire show. They're only unnecessary in that any one episode isn't required to understand the show, but the format is relying on these encapsulated moments to present itself; every episode expands reveals a larger portion of the story.

I can get easily tired of erotic fan-service, but there are still other types of fan-service which I can enjoy - for instance during the later episodes of Clannad they had Fuuka show up out of no where, take some screen time, and disappear after bringing joy to the world. Or in Darker Than Black, after I kind of got tired of the tone of the series, they introduced the private eye and his adorable assistant for a few episode which brought some light and humour into the series.

Oh, and I love watching the omake at the end of some of my favourite anime, especially with Bleach during filler, it's sometime worth downloading just to watch the Shinigami Cup segment.

While many mature western movies have at least one sex scene which is actually quite graphic, most animes contain girls in skimpy outfits performing suggestive things while never actually doing anything.

As a girl, at times I find it a little ridiculous, as in fighting scenes- most people don't wear micro short skirts, and down to there blouses to engage in battle (for one thing where does a girl keep her weapons?), like they did in Tenjou Tenge, Ikkitousen, but I can see how it is enjoyable.
But then why rip their clothes off to boot, they are already flashing you ^_^. The first season of Rosario + Vampire there was a lot of fanservice, but it didn't bother me it was funny, in the second however it just seemed contrived as if they were saying "ohh jiggly wiggly here, panty flash there, it has been a least 5 seconds with no skin showing".

Too much fanservice? Yes, it can ruin an anime (Ikkitousen, Rosario) or just have a general lowering of quality effect. It doesn't necessarily have to have this effect though if done mildly and plausibly.

If someone wants fan service that badly, they can go watch a hentai. But as long enough people like it, it won't go away..

No offense, but I'll say this as my opinion, no intention to offend others likes and dislikes, hope you can understand as much as I try to understand yours too... I believe, anime nowadays does give too much fanservice, especially in shoujo genre, who gives alot fanservice among men, whoever wants to watch animes when the girls wears less and almost nude or the breast are too... fft... BOINGY? (whatever you call it).. it's a disgrace.. in shoujo (reverse harem) I don't really like when 1 girl, just 1 girl...and all MEN fell in love with her, and if all men are too gorgeous, now that's ridiculous.. now that's too much right?

again, sorry if I did offend those who LOVE lots and lots of fanservice..

Personally, I think there are too many anime shows airing where the director/producers feel they *need* fan service in order to be "successful". I'd say this reflects the lack of quality shows over the last few years.

There are too many anime shows using school settings, featuring loser main characters, with young protagonists, where drama = melodrama + tween tears, and shows where the art style makes just about everyone look the same (including guys and girls). It's no wonder they need panty shots to get guys to watch.

I think there are too many school days anime as well. I mean I hope there is far more to life than your high school years.
Alot of shows with fanservice are just funny and cute, as in DearS where he is trying to get clothes on her, and He Is My Master. I didn't find the fanservice in either of those show too much, as that is what the show is all about. The teacher in DearS ranks right up there with the biggest pervs in anime if you ask me. ^_^

Yes, I agree with you. If rated by percentage, almost 90% of animes nowadays are schoolgirls, weakling schoolgirls, always do CUTIE CUTEY things (which I dislike, too naive..grr) and always DEPEND among men (now, I wish I could shout the hell of their faces to..."JUST DIE STUPID WOMEN!!!") and thus, being carried away... I've been searching for good animes which does not include too much of a fanservice (yea... fanservice among men and not for me (a girl) why would I like seeing breast boing? hearing moans and panties... I'm not a lesbian so why would i enjoy such fanservice then? T_T oh well...stupid animators fault, there are lots of good mangas out there waiting to be animated and here they are stupid shoujo ecchi being animated so easily... d*mn.. feel so...

I see lots of directors and animators being unjustifiably blamed... remember that broadcasters pander to the wishes of their fans, and pass those demands down to the studios, producers, directors and animators. Guess who's at fault then.
