Here's what I believe is the current timeline.
Requires Pre-order beta key
Sept 18th-20th: Preselection - You can log onto the servers to make and name your character.
Sept 20th-22nd: Head-start - You can start playing 2 days earlier than the release date.
Sept 22nd: Retail release. Now here's what I've heard, but haven't been able to confirm. Supposedly you can play on your beta key for a few days after release. I like this because I hated going to midnight releases. (if there even was one) It'd be great if I could just keep playing it and go pick up my copy whenever I'm out running some errands later in the week or something.

That's correct for NA.
but for EU it's more like this:

I've heard that from several places aswell, I can ask Ayase(Aions CM) next time I see him online to confirm it.

bro i do that all the time. . .killing dragons its an average thing!. . .being an orc/undead/taurem isnt. . . ;D
