Regarding the release-date, if you got preorder-key you get headstart and get access to the server the 20th September, both EU and NA.

GoGeTa006, that's why you have transformation items!

If you group:

1.0- ~70% of the total XP can be made questing
1.1- ~90% of the total XP can be made questing
1.2- ~100% of the total XP can be made questing

If you don't group:

1.0- ~50% of the total XP can be made questing
1.1- ~60% of the total XP can be made questing
1.2- ~80% of the total XP can be made questing

The EU/NA beta is currently version 1.0 with elements of 1.1 and 1.2. It will be released as 1.5(don't ask me what happened to 1.3 and 1.4, I also wonder that).
So unlike earlier korean mmo this ain't a grindfeast, I made lvl30 in 2weeks in chinese-aion(chinese-aion were version 1.1 when I played), max level at that version are 45, I grinded around 5levels in total and I skipped the group-quests as I didn't bother as I had no clue what they were talking about ;P

alright
seems like ill preorder it
it all depends on what grade i got on my calculus midterm. . .
that will answer my question: "how much time do i need for calculus?"

=== beta starts tomorrow ===

Just hope EU-auth servers won't crash again like it happened in CBT2-3 ^^
I have around 800k-1m khina so hopefully I will be able to buy some decent lvl25 gear and enchant it.
With a very high amount of luck it might be possible to get atleast one of these http://www.aionarmory.com/item.aspx?id=100200239
*drools*
Will be interesting to see how flying-pvp are, I pvped a decent amount already through rift but as you cannot fly there it's not all that fun as assassin when they cuddle up against npcs that oneshot you...

I'm tempted to splurge $70 on the collector's edition preorder... I want to start playing now and the extra items seem pretty nice.

Actually there is a aion sandbox, though it's only version 0.0.3, so you can only play with character creator and walk around some areas and spawn mobs, no interaction with the npcs at all though yet.

I don't see why people want a sandbox game online? Most are failures since they lack proper guidance on where you should be right now in order to have the most challenging and rewarding experience. You usually end up fighting something way to easy or something impossible with no way to know where you find a good area. At least that is my impression of that kind of game.

The current emu-project are going to place mobs etc the same way it's on retail, ofcourse people can change that stuff themselves in teh database.

Would be interresting to know what those "sandbox" games you refer to are called.

As for guidance..there shouldnt be someone to hold youre hand. Sandbox should be nonlinear.

Well that depends on the definition of sandbox. A game such as runescape or really any mmo can be counted as sandbox since you can grind and never have to quest in them, if you play them as sandbox they aren't a lot of fun.

The universal or EVE is probably more in line with what you think, which wasn't all that fun either.
Even though EVE has a lot of quests and so on the earlier versions pretty much just left you there to start out mining or whatever you wanted to do. Which meant that with minor rewards (apart from money) to continue doing the same things it quickly lost interest.

Garry's Mod is another game that soon lost its interest as an online game. I have hard time thinking up other sandbox online game. Single player ones like oblivion or gta aren't all that much fun either.

About the only game ive played that comes close to being a sandbox is Fallout 3.

Eve is definitly not a sandbox. Theres some features like ship customization, skill selection and construction of buildings. All of them is pretty limited both in content and possiblities. And skills take real time.

Ive never played runescape so i cant say much about it.

I think the reason why theres no real sandbox mmorpgs is that it would require ALOT of work to make, and a verry well-planned long term prediction of how the game would develop.
Not something money-hungry creditors grin about when they plan theyre next venture.

Dinged lvl25 8-9hours ago, and must say abyss is quite empty, no action there at all. As lvl23+ you will hit a wall noticing lack of quests(because beta is 1.0) you will need to grind some. Very few players so far in eu have actually hit lvl25, so the "abyss-beta" might become pretty boring...We found a rift instead and did some massive pvp against the asmodians.

What is the difference between them and a standard mmo. You have items, you have levels and crafting (bleh). You have quests, you have npcs and factions. You have huge worlds you don't have to do in any special order once the tutorial (prison or whatever) is done. You have dungeons, a main plot line. Only difference is other players or not in my eyes...

Well that and that you have a much harder time cheating/modding in mmo's to spice things up.

A sandbox mmorpg are supposed to be as open as possible, and give the player freedom. If you made a game with levels, classes, instances and shit thats clearly linear. Its no longer a sandbox.

Great definition of a Sandbox MMORPG:

“Sandbox is a style game where the objectives are not predefined by the developer, you are given a world with some minimal predefined rulesets and you make your own game in it.
Like a childs sandbox, which is just a box of sand, the actual game comes from the childs imagination and doesn’t have a set objective such as Ludo for instance.”
