Been playing fallout 3 again while think about fallout 1/2, watching various Animes to the side, and started to wondering if I was the only one think that Japanese animators and writers could seriously make quite a few good series from all the material in the 3 games. When you some down to it the games have a lot of depth and plot, be it non-linear most of the time. To bad no animator has ever take up the challenge.

I honestly think that they would need quite a bit more storyline than what's available. Sure, the whole "post-apocalyptic searching-for-my-father and trying to save the world from total annihilation by mutants" thing may sound good just talking about it, but honestly there is a serious lack of usable entertaining content if you just take the game as is. They would need quite a bit of added excitement for it to get positive feedback, otherwise, I feel the show would be a little bland, and just a mish-mash of those cookie-cutter themes.

That only the main plot. There are lots of other unrelated quests, un-marker quest, history to discover in the game. Same with the other 2 series. Sure if you do only the main quest it's over quick, but all 3 games were about the character's journey threw the waste land and his effect on it. Sadly that effect was cut from the ending of fallout 3, but in fallout 1/2 when you beat the game it told you exactly what happen because of your action with each city/civilization. Not just what happen in the main quest.

All of that is what I'm referring to as good for some anime series. The main story would be the search for father(Fo3), Finding water chip(fo1), find the Geck to save Village(Fo2) but along the way, the character would help stop raiders from attack shady sands (fo1), save a hunter from geckos (fo2), or stop a "vampire" problem (FO3).

most of it would make for a seemingly boring series IMO or one that is rehashed telling of like 8 million other animes from the 80s/90s taking place in post apocalyptic world.

Lots of video games become anime series anyways, but I think it would have to be a big hit in Japan first before they'd even consider it, since that is their main market.

Actually, rather than Fallout, I think Deus Ex would be the most awesome candidate for anime adaptation.

Considering Appleseed and Ghost in The Shell (and others), the talent and capability is there.

Japan can make a good anything. Case in point:

I present "Cat Shit One - The animated series coming soon."

i don't think games where combat plays a big role (moves the plot) would make a good anime.

Are there any good anime based on a video game?

Disgaea and Devil May Cry are the first two that come to my mind, and they were mediocre at best as anime.... I suppose one could argue for Druaga no Tou, but that's fairly big leap from the original game content.

While I know your post was referring to general view of game-to-[video adaptation], I have to point out as I mentioned Deus Ex, the combat itself in this game is playing a very small role - aspecially regarding the plot-moving.

But then again, this is offtopic, sorry for the intrusion :|

Persona Trinity Soul was enjoyable overall, although it had pacing issues and what I would argue was a weak ending... still, it was fairly loosely tied to the game franchise. I'd like to see a Persona 3 anime based off of the manga story-line, though it's probably way too late for it.

Clannad and other anime based off of interactive visual novel-styled games have been successful, come to think of it - they're little different then manga I suppose.

The third game, being a first person shooter, is far more reliant on combat as a story element than the first two. There's certainly combat in the first two games, but it's also possible to almost avoid it entirely, including beating them both by talking through the final encounter instead of fighting.

I honestly think that Fallout would be better suited for a Hollywood movie than an anime or manga. Mainly because it leans more towards the western style of media. Not that I didn't love all of the Fallout games but I think they have a very distinct style that wouldn't lend itself well to an anime. Plus there are other games I think would make a better anime.
