Why, Hollywood, why?
« on: March 31, 2009, 07:09:08 PM »
Hmm... this announcement was made more than two months ago, and I didn't notice it.
20th Century Fox collaborates with Sunrise to make Cowboy Bebop: NOW IN 3D.
THIS IS A JOKE. IT WON'T ACTUALLY BE IN 3D.
JESUS, READ MY BOLD TEXT, IT WON'T BE IN ###KING 3D!

Some good news, Shinichiro Watanabe is acting as production consultant, and so is the scriptwriter.
Some bad news... Keanu Reeves.

Why, Hollywood, why?

Because you touch yourself....

But seriously Keanu Reeves is one of those horrible actors who actually make some money.... almost like Uwe Boll  ;D
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Some bad news... Keanu Reeves.

I don't think he's a bad actor, but he can't play Spike. No way in hell. Nope.

Doomed to fail.

It's too early to assume it'll be an epic failure, I've always thought Bebop would translate well to live action - especially after seeing Firefly/Serenity.

Reeeeeeeeeeetarded.  Why doesn't Japanese cinema just do a live action?  Hollywood has been a pile of crap recently.

I knew of this long ago and posted it on other websites, and most members can't see Keanu even  doing justice to the role at all. Most say he is so stiff and devoid of emotion to even attempt it. But in all honesty, Spike is such a classic anime character, who would we accept in the role?

If Reeves is gonna be Spike, it will fail. He has the sarcasm needed to play the part, but he's NOT funny. Wrong guy for the job.

Exactly. I can't think of anyone who could play Spike and do him any justice at all.

I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Bebop is finished and anything they do now is unlikely to have ruined the chances of something else. I don't think the material is so untouchable it can't be done, and at worst it'll probably be a crappy action film we'll forget about later.

Reeves doesn't have a very huge range, but I could see him doing Spike. Do it well? I dunno. I'd rather he do it than they get some nameless actor who's future probably includes more boring teen/young adult dramas than action movies.

Emo actors should play emo characters, not badasses.

Spike = Badass

"No names" usually fill in these kinds of roles pretty well.  Thing is, Hollywood wants to obviously attach names to the film.  I wouldn't be surprised if they try to get Ving Rhames for Jet, which would be ok I think.  Keanu is a bit drab and limited and would not fit Spike.

How'd Dragonball's no name work out? Wasn't the only notable Chow Yun-Fat?

I think it becomes an effort less to fill the role as to pimp some up and comer who probably better fits a WB drama than an action film.

I don't think Reeves will do a particularly bad job, but since it's Hollywood, I'm betting they go for a nice romance with Faye... And Jet (Vin Diesel? It could happen.) probably dies to give emotional drama. They'll probably age Ed up to non-minor since she's always wearing that loose singlet with nothing underneath.

How is Keanu Reeves going to pull off Spike's hair? I'm doubting that he can. I imagine Spike's hair is like those people you see whose hair is  curly and it just mounds up but since they have large (like silver dollar size) curls it somehow inevitably looks cool. Keanu Reeves does not have that hair :( He only has flat straight emo hair.

After some thought, the only guy I could imagine pulling off Spike would be Mel Gibson. He's a badass and a crazy s.o.b. Shame he's a bit too old to look the part.

Any thoughts on who'd play a great Faye?

I still got my fingers crossed for it not to break evangelion.

from what i know weta workshops (LOTR) are sort of geeks that like evangelion. . . ergo they said that they would TRY not to hollywood-ize it. . . lets just hope for the best. . .

good things:

-120 m dlls budget 0.o (LOTR = 100 , matrix = 80)

I'm not gay or anything, but I enjoy Keanu Reeves' movies.  Including the ones that get bad reviews.  Probably because of the type of roles and movie themes that he portrays in.

I'm no fan of Cowboy Bebop, but with Keanu Reeves in it, it may be better than expected.  Atleast for me.  They could have picked much much worse.  Keanu Reeves is one of the few big actors that accepts roles like this. But why 3D?

I also have big expectations for Eva, which makes me nervous.... unlike Bebop.

I think the 3D part is an embellishment on quekmeister's part. It's not mentioned in the article.
