I was really happy with the first episode, can't wait to see where it goes. Did the release info about how many episodes it's going to be?

I forget where I read it, but I remember reading something about a 'year-long airing', or something to that effect, so probably ~50 episodes.

Quote from: AniDB.net
An official announcement of the new anime series of Fullmetal Alchemist was made on the cover notes of the original manga volume 20. MOONPHASE's anonymous source says it'll be one-year series aired from April 2009. The script will be based on the manga.

There you go.

Does anyone know what part of the manga this is based on? I havent read the manga but I watched the first season and the movie but this doesnt seem to fit with either of those. Also one of the characters in this season was in the other season but they reintroduced him as a new character like they had never met before. Is this supposed to be basically they started full metal alchemist all over from the start and igorning the other seasons?

Yes, it's a complete restart that follows the manga more faithfully. The first FMA anime completely derailed from the manga's plot after the island survival flashback (episode 25?). So for example

Rechecking volume 1, the story starts with Lior and Risembool. Since the manga is nearing completion, they might have added this Ice Alchemist bit to give new viewers hints that there's something fishy about Amestris and it's leader, Bradley.

Anyway, I liked this first episode for the most part. I'm a bit on the fence about the visuals for the comedy bits. They're faithful to the manga's style but seem out of place in an anime.

Watched the raw last night, and while I couldn't understand it all, it looked quite top-notch. The animation style is slightly different - mainly, the eyes don't have the depth they did in the original series. It's not bad at all, though, and is very fluid. I liked it.

I agree that the comedy visuals... feels a tad out of place, but I'll probably get used to it.

Also, it was nice to hear YUI making a comeback from her hiatus with the opening theme!

Wow, Eclipse has picked this one up now. Since their policy is not to drop things regardless, it's conceivable that they'll finish it.
Oh my god, Funimation is gonna be so pissed off! I'm so happy that they picked it up! They're my favorite fansub.

Are they picking up Hayate no Gotoku 2nd Season?! I hope they are! They should ignore HorribleSubs trolling. After all, they ARE horrible.
Yes!
=]
I remember being on #eclipse back in april when they released the OVA of the second season and called it "Hayate no Gotoku!! episode 0" therefore I presumed that they will pick the whole season.
Indeed Eclipse is <3.

The anime itself was pretty good, I liked it overall giving us a shot of every character and .. man .. ((spoiler on ep1 of FMA:Brotherhood))
ice sure did feel King Bradleys wrath in the end.

The first episode was amazing... with the exception of the comedy bits, as has already been mentioned. They completely ruin the moment and the overall feel of the show. I hope they're used sparingly, and not ever again in the midst of a fight. So annoying. I don't mind dark humor in a fight, like Black Lagoon has... but that garbage has got to go.

And I loved the OP!

YUI FTW!

Yui opening was awesome :D Just finished the first episode today from eclipse. Eclipse did AMAZING visual quality and the newer animation style used for the new full metal alchemist makes everything look incredible (though Edward looks a little funny to me now). Maybe my computer was running slow earlier but the eclipse version I got was TERRIBLE in everything other than video quality. 80% of the show had missing subs or the subs were so far out of timing that I couldn't figure out what was going on (I blame eclipse instead of my computer though since they would eventually catch up with themselves and start making sense again). Also the sound wasn't timed correctly with the video in these parts either, though again, this might have just been my own computer flaws. Can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the episodes.
