I forget where I read it, but I remember reading something about a 'year-long airing', or something to that effect, so probably ~50 episodes.

--- Quote from: AniDB.net ---An official announcement of the new anime series of Fullmetal Alchemist was made on the cover notes of the original manga volume 20. MOONPHASE's anonymous source says it'll be one-year series aired from April 2009. The script will be based on the manga.

There you go.

Sakubo:
Does anyone know what part of the manga this is based on? I havent read the manga but I watched the first season and the movie but this doesnt seem to fit with either of those. Also one of the characters in this season was in the other season but they reintroduced him as a new character like they had never met before. Is this supposed to be basically they started full metal alchemist all over from the start and igorning the other seasons?

Yes, it's a complete restart that follows the manga more faithfully. The first FMA anime completely derailed from the manga's plot after the island survival flashback (episode 25?). So for example (click to show/hide)Wrath is introduced later and isn't a brat with Ed's missing limbs. The first anime also left Tucker (the guy who made chimeras of his wife and daughter) around to fill in for some later manga characters that were left out.
Rechecking volume 1, the story starts with Lior and Risembool. Since the manga is nearing completion, they might have added this Ice Alchemist bit to give new viewers hints that there's something fishy about Amestris and it's leader, Bradley.

Anyway, I liked this first episode for the most part. I'm a bit on the fence about the visuals for the comedy bits. They're faithful to the manga's style but seem out of place in an anime.

UMMX:
No The first anime Derailed when (click to show/hide)it was when Maes Hughes got killed. In that episode, is when the anime and manga split into. They was supposed to talk to (click to show/hide)the king on the train before they saw (click to show/hide)Hughes ghost waving goodbye.

Also did you guys hear that Funimation is also going to have FMA on there website....
