Wouldn't expect it. The reason they're that expensive is because they're japanese prices. You'll have to go to some small shop to look for cheap anime, and I doubt you'll find Clannad in the bargain bin.

Clannad ~AfterStory~ was re-released by Coalgirls. Their reasoning for the release "Made some v2′s of problematic episodes." I've already downloaded it and going to replace it with my older AfterStory files.

I just finished watching the series, except for the two extra episodes of After Story. I went in without any spoilers or knowledge of the VN.

The first series is pretty good, and After Story is really amazing... until the fucking ending. Putting aside the fact that it's needlessly complicated and inadequately foreshadowed, it just makes no thematic sense to me. Was there some moral lesson Tomoya needed to learn by experiencing Ushio's death? No, there wasn't. He had already completed his arc by that point. He had reconnected with Ushio, reconciled with his father and accepted Nagisa's death. He didn't have to atone for or learn anything. Did Ushio's death and Tomoya's subsequent trip to the past further the story's themes in some way? No, not that I can see.

The story's theme is family. As we see so many times throughout the series, family is a source of support and strength, and as long as you have your family you can get through painful things. Tomoya is devastated by Nagisa's death, but he still has his daughter and Nagisa's parents... his family. He is able to move on and become happy with Ushio. He even expands his family by meeting his grandmother and reconciling with his father. Not the best possible ending, but still uplifting and hopeful, consistent with the story's theme and relevant to real life.

If only it had stopped there. The ultimate moral of the story ends up being that if you accumulate enough good karma you can magically timewarp to an alternate reality where the bad things in your past didn't happen. Durr? Of course it would have been too sad if Ushio had died as well, and wouldn't have supported the story's theme or fit its tone, but... why kill her to begin with? Don't even make her sick. The deus ex machina solves a problem that didn't need to be introduced in the first place. And in doing so it fucks everything up. Another way of resolving the situation would have been to mirror the way Nagisa recovered after her father prayed for her. In fact, I thought that's exactly what was going to happen since the scene was almost identical... but no, instead we get time travel, alternate realities and a total disregard for everything that happened in the story previously. Christ.

Change is another theme of the story. Life changes, the city changes, people change. For better or worse. Good thing we can just travel back in time to undo all those changes, right? Herp derp.

Atrociously bad ending aside, what I really like about After Story is that it doesn't stick to a formula. The characters don't stay in high school forever, they actually graduate, get jobs and start families. They grow up and change. And even then things don't go the way you might expect them to. It was entirely predictable that Nagisa would have a difficult childbirth, but I didn't expect her to die. On the other hand, the story is also predictable in the right ways. When you see the state Tomoya is in after Nagisa's death, you know he's repeating what his father went through, and you know he'll eventually realize it and reconcile with him. Right until the moment Ushio dies -- or perhaps the moment when she's revealed to have the same mystery disease as her mother -- the story is absolutely superb. And then it's not.

Throughout this topic there have been many posts in a discussion about the ending. You might want to read that since you finished the series. There was a reason for it.

Completely agree. The ending ruined the series for me. Would have preferred a tragic ending personally.

I'd agree as well. It's nice to see how the ending folded, but it would have been better if they did an alternate ending - one could be a True Ending (before his wish came true) the other can be a Good Ending (happy ending).

Technically, that's what you got. You had the tragic ending with Clannad and the happy ending with After story. True they intended that from the start, but I liked the ending of After story.

Clannad? Tragic? What the hell did you watch? Clannad wasn't tragic. It was straight-up forced sadness. AS had the chance to be tragic, but blew it.

Hahah, yep. I agree with you there

I laughed through Clannad, especially the crying scenes. It was the most forced drama I've ever seen. It was awful, especially the Fuuko arc. Playing sad music =/= sad moment. AS though, had legit drama and tears and was pretty moving, until that farce of an ending.

The alt world ending seems to have been planned from the first ep of the first series as the alt world was present since ep1.

Clannad was really a beautiful series, and I dont ascribe that word to things often. Funny, heartwarming, and devastatingly sad, but with a happy ending. Never had another series/show mix together those emotions so well. From about ep 15 on in After Story I was fucking bawling almost nonstop. I tear up sometimes when something really touching/sad happens, but I've never cried like that in my life from something other than an IRL death of a friend/family member.

Ultimately the series left me wondering if Id rather have something perfect like that and lose it, or never have it at all. I know I could never go on after losing what Tomoya does. Haha Im crying now just from listening to Chiisana Tenohira

Funny, I just rewatched episode 18 again, this time in dub. Now now, before people start raging and flaming at me for doing so, I felt intrigued to do it. Besides, Netflix had it up there, so why not?

I can't say the dub was awful, because its definitely a step up from other dubs I've seen in the past. On the other hand, the dub wasn't great either, especially when it came to pronuciation and localization of certain names and parts (first and second respectfully). The spoiler'd moment that was mentioned by Malakai0, was actually halfway decent. I still got the sense of emotion and the voices didn't throw me off from the scene. I will say though, half of the reason probably came from the fact of how many times I've seen it in Japanese, that I still think of the Japanese version regardless.

The best scene in Clannad, in my opinion.

Considering how incredible the voice acting was in Clannad, watching the dubs is like sacrilege IMO

I did watch a few scenes in english on youtube, didn't expect much and wasn't surprised.

Bigtime ?.? for those who thought clannad wasn't good or sad, or that the drama was forced. I want to try and get my non anime watching sis to watch it. Type who cries to shitty american movies and stuff. Will be interesting to see how shes doing by around 18 of after story. Doubt I can get her to actually pay attn to subs tho oh well

Clannad lost its drama place for 1 Litre of Tears. As much as Clannad made me tear, 1 Litre of Tears had me going from the first 5 seconds of the first episode all the way to the last episode and for weeks ...
