Clannad [Series]

PithyGriff:
Personally, I liked the ending.

(click to show/hide)Ushio's illness and death allow you to see/feel how much Tomoya really cares for her. The emotion level was riding pretty high after he finally came to terms with taking care of Ushio, and after they started getting along. It seems like everything is going to turn out well. But it really gets turned up to 11 after Ushio gets sick and dies. It's powerful as hell. I think it makes thematic sense too, because it really drives home how important that little girl was to her father.

I was also happy with the deus ex machina ending. After losing Nagisa (and tumbling into despondency) and then Ushio (after he's finally found purpose in his life) the only place I could see the story going is Tomoya eating a bullet. With the 'other world' stuff starting every episode, the time-warp felt justified, and not duct-taped on.

Clannad? Tragic? What the hell did you watch? Clannad wasn't tragic. It was straight-up forced sadness. AS had the chance to be tragic, but blew it.

I suppose we'll have to agree to disagree there. I didn't see it as forced at all. I guess different people take different things away from this.

Hahah, yep. I agree with you there :P

I laughed through Clannad, especially the crying scenes. It was the most forced drama I've ever seen. It was awful, especially the Fuuko arc. Playing sad music =/= sad moment. AS though, had legit drama and tears and was pretty moving, until that farce of an ending.

(click to show/hide)If Clannad had simply ended with Ushiio dying I might have killed myself.
The alt world ending seems to have been planned from the first ep of the first series as the alt world was present since ep1.

Clannad was really a beautiful series, and I dont ascribe that word to things often. Funny, heartwarming, and devastatingly sad, but with a happy ending. Never had another series/show mix together those emotions so well. From about ep 15 on in After Story I was fucking bawling almost nonstop. I tear up sometimes when something really touching/sad happens, but I've never cried like that in my life from something other than an IRL death of a friend/family member.

(click to show/hide)The parts with Ushio and Tomoya reconnecting (especially in the field) and remembering Nagisa were incredible, just thinking about it is still making me tear up 2 days after watching
Ultimately the series left me wondering if Id rather have something perfect like that and lose it, or never have it at all. I know I could never go on after losing what Tomoya does. Haha Im crying now just from listening to Chiisana Tenohira
