Cross Game

I was going to pass this one up at first as it is sports related, but if I had done so, I would have missed out on a very good anime. It is also getting alot of good reviews by both fans, and professionals, so don't let the old fashioned look turn you away from this very endearing, and thought provoking anime.

Well, Jade finally released their first episode, and it looks a LOT better than the Shiki-subs version. I was getting a bit worried that no good group was going to release this one...

Anyway, I was on the same boat, it was a sports anime (Which I'm not normally interested in), but reading the preview piqued my interest, and then the first episode reviews at ANN solidified my interest, so I checked out the first episode. It's the first time I've personally seen an anime try to pull a tear-jerker on the first freakin' episode, but this one seems to have gotten away with it, so I'll definitely keep watching this one for a while.

Apparently, the person who did the Cross Game manga also did Touch, which I've heard is pretty good, so maybe I'll have to go check that one out too now, though 101 episodes + movies is just a little daunting...

I have the Shiki-subs version. I was hoping other groups would sub this.

Didn't notice this turned into an anime until I saw a notice about it in the manga yesterday. :)

Will see if it is as good as many of this mangaka's other anime versions have been.

Wonder what version to go with, heard CA did a good job on it, but don't really know...

CA is good, but personally I'm going with ANBU. No truly specific reason though.

Having watched up to episode 5 now with CA I have to say it is good, but that I dislike the typesetting a bit. Anidb comments seems to state that ANBU mistranslated the school's name in ep 4-5. Something that you don't have to accept in a series with several good groups.

Prob. will end up archiving MJN after they finish due to them being affiliated with the manga scanlator :)

Jade seems to have done a nice job considering I've never heard of them before.

Same here. I'll archive MJN's version. I too don't like CA's typesetting.

Very short thread, i guess this show wasn't that popular =P I went to d.load this show because i heard it was pretty good. I was comparing it to another series by the creator named touch and the plot sounds verry similar.. is this a remake of touch or its own story with a similar description? I also notice its got a tragety tag which i find strange. It sounds like a light hearted slice of life show to me. Should i actually expect some serious drama?

im gonna give it a look but i was curious what group would be the best bet. I notice ANBU and CV are here and both rated well on ANIDB. CV is 720p, while ANBU is just SD. What did this originally air in? Basically i want to know if the CV version is an upscale or what. I gotta choose which version to go with and unless the video qualitys a huge jump in CV i may just go with ANBU.. i really dislike the ugly yellow CV font

does one groups actual subs outshine the other or are they both pretty well done translation wise?

Oh I loved this show, simply because of how the first episode ends up; I can't see myself following any series about conventional sports, but the characters in Cross Game were just great, especially Tsukishima Aoba :3 my future wife.

Heck I have been putting off seeing the last episode for a while now cause I like them so much :)

and yeah, even my interest in baseball has grown after watching this ;D That's what I love about anime; they can get you interested in stuff you'd've never considered otherwise (i.e. Hikaru no Go and Saki etc.)

I loved this show, the first episode was a real hook for me. It was also fairly sad on my part between Wakaba and Kou. The only problem I had was that it was kind of slow in some parts, but nevertheless it was a very good series that had a great plot for baseball.

It's an original story. Tragedy happened very early on before we enter there lives. It has some drama but not very serious. Good character development. I preferred Central. Originally aired on an HD channel but was upscaled from SD. Remember to check Ji-Hi. It can answer a lot of these questions fairly often.

And why do people always complain about the font or styling in soft-subbed MKV's when you can change them to whatever you like regardless of what fonts and styles were put into the container?

well sounds like its damn good. I snagged the first few epps of each group to see which one i'll go for. Unless the 720p really blows me away, or CV's sub quality is way better then im probably going for ayako. Like i said i dislike their ugly font, and the filezise is pretty big for a series this long

Its funny renton mentioned that he doesn't like sports anime. This was recomended to me as a sports anime to watch for people who aren't into sports anime. This and one outs. Im kinda in the mood for something with good character development and characters i give a crap about so this sounds like it may fit the bill

Oh, and i do use Ji-hi and it can be ok to show glaring problems with some groups sometimes but doesn't really fill in for someone whos compared them's opinion

holy crap this show is awesome! i dont know what it is, it has some bizare charm that sucked me in. I wasnt feeling well so i just lounged around all day the other day and just couldnt' stop watching this. I blew through 20 episodes!

I hate sports shows but this seems to really focus on the characters and that out of the blue depressing first epp was definatly different. Good stuff

Im wondering if i should check out this guys other work, like Touch.

Touch is really good as well. It's pretty old but if you can get over the dated animation, you won't be disappointed.

His works are pretty much the same. I thought Touch definitely had a better core story, but a worse pacing in the mid. Cross Game also lost pace for me somewhere in the middle, but it still remains more solid and consistent.

Wtf. How did everyone not go gaga over this show? The storytelling is fucking superb all throughout. Easily my favourite show to date.

I was avoiding this because I thought it would have a cheesy romance story and have very little to do with baseball (from looking at the anidb picture). Still am actually.

I actually finished this a month ago and gave it a 10.

Definitely one of the best anime I've ever seen.
