Funimation Licenses Strike Witches
quekmeister:
I bet they haven't even watched any of it, they just think: Oh, it's gotten government acknowledgement, it's got girls and guns, alternate WWII history, guys will like it!
I predict more child porn accusations...

I have to say I'm surprised. I know there's been a lot of debate here and elsewhere on "the effects of fansubs on R1 DVD sales," but one trend I've noticed is that the more loli content a series has, the worse it will do in R1 sales compared to other series of comparable fansub popularity. Cases in point: Nanoha, Popotan, Strawberry Marshmallow, Rozen Maiden, Higurashi, and (maybe) Familiar of Zero. And look what happened to the company that licensed all of those. I don't know why this is... perhaps neither casual buyers nor hardcore fans want DVDs that scream "I'm a pedophile"* on their shelves. I thought Funimation was wiser in selecting series that would appeal to broader audiences. What's next, Moetan?
* this is regardless of whether the shows actually are evil/immoral/why-don't-you-have-a-seat-over-there? material or not. I haven't seen Strike Witches, so I'm only familiar with it by reputation.

Don't worry, it fits its reputation quite perfectly.
I always thought loli/moe shows held more appeal to the otaku (more "hardcore") demographic, and not so much to the mainstream watchers. So Funi's move is definitely a little weird. Especially if they're going to do dubbing on this.
Southrop:
Sankaku Complex speculates censorship on the R1 DVDs. Like... adding TROUSERS! But everyone knows these ladies are already wearing TROUSERS >:U

Mio and Yoshika just won't be the same anymore :'(
So, more importantly, how will the buyers react to flying loli pantsu + nipplage when it starts selling?

I think the 10-13 year old demographic who watches it will be greatly entertained, if nothing else. And I'm sure they won't care how crappy the dubbing is, either.
