well i notice in most of the anime of i've seen (and ive seen lots)
there isnt many darker skinned main characters. (other then Gundam 00, savior of life = middle eastern)
and there still isnt many foreign main characters in any anime.
its almost depressing(to me anyway), theres Bob Makihara in tenjou tenge and the black dude from blood plus.
i mean even if every body is japanese people still have blonde hair and blue eyes, which is definitely not native to japan.
there is seldom anybody with less than mildly tan skin in anime.
in anime where i cant relate to a lot of the chracters i feel even more disconnected when none of them
look even remotely similar to me(being black with braids and sometimes a crazed lookin afro).
im i the only person who notices this? i still love anime and enjoy watching it. thought just wish there was more
a variety of characters, even more americanized characters would be nice.
then again maybe im trippin

It's meant to appeal to Japanese viewers mainly, how many black japanese people do you think there are?

Also Black Lagoon has a mixed race of cast for it's main crew.

Meanwhile anime that was developed for the american audience, would be Afro Samurai.

Uses up more ink? Banding issues when encoding? Naruto was switched to using that silly headband, because the artist didn't want to have to keep drawing the original goggles.

Comparing the few number of dark skinned people in Japan, think they are well represented in anime. Can't expect them to be shown in a typical school setting, which most anime is revolved around. Well, not counting Ganguro Girls. Can watch Super Gals if want more of that.

Skin lightening cosmetics is pretty popular with Asians, made by popular western companies, which would be taboo to widely market here.

Caska from Berserk has dark tinted skin. Perhaps not black, but certainly foreign.

The various Gundams have racially diverse characters, although ethnic orgin is usually difficult to assert with their weird naming style and SF-styled environments.
