this reminded me of a documentary I saw in which a black woman was sharing her account of what happened when she visited a remote town somewhere in southeast Asia.  Apparently, the people she met had never even seen a black person before.  Everyone was just drawn to her and kept touching and ogling her in complete wonder and amazement.  The way she described it, she was overtaken with a feeling of being special... there was no sense of negativity or racism.

This would have been even better if she turned to the people and claimed that she was their god! Now feed the almighty being!

And all really black guys are muscular. Because it is a stereotype view, when viewed in non offensive context it is actually amusing. (But then again in anime an american is usually either dumb or stupid  ;D)

GUILE FROM STREET FIGHTER ((((^_^))))

Big forehead, insensitive "bloke" with no refined features whatsoever...that and the belief that all mid-western, "home-bred", apple-pie, suzie-Q dating males are enrolled in the Army and National Guard :)

Also@barcibus...I have had that debate in my head a lot...And when you compare home-bred American Marvel comics to Anime it begins to make sense, the differences in perceived "Asian-ness" present. After all I think it was us who gave the Japanese animation to begin with (mickey mouse and stuff), and they sort of took that model and ran away with it. But I guess it will always look similar to American animation in some way because of that Pre-WWII art history.

"RETSU GETTO READAY TOA RUOMBRE!" - Guile

I know a Japanese guy born in Tokyo but raised in NJ so he can pronounce "L"'s which make it really hard to make fun of him :( without the "R" "L" Engrish mix-up there is simply no ammunition!

But he can't make fun of me because I speak Japanese with no accent because I have what linguists call a "neutral-bloc" in my head that doesn't allow me to develop strong accents :)

I think, technically speaking, there aren't a ton of white/caucasian people in anime either (granted there are far more than black people); they're almost all supposed to be actual Japanese people.
I think it is just natural for anime (and manga/books/movies/tvshows/music) to be focused on what they are used to seeing in Japan.  I wonder how many black people there are in Japan (outside U.S. military bases)... the number's got to be quite small.

What I wonder about is how anime characters almost always look white/caucasian to me, but do they look asian to Japanese people?

I'm not saying it is the same situation in Japan, but this reminded me of a documentary I saw in which a black woman was sharing her account of what happened when she visited a remote town somewhere in southeast Asia.  Apparently, the people she met had never even seen a black person before.  Everyone was just drawn to her and kept touching and ogling her in complete wonder and amazement.  The way she described it, she was overtaken with a feeling of being special... there was no sense of negativity or racism.

baccano is supposed to be all white people for the most part if memory serves

Yashima Sanae from Hanaukyo Maid Tai/Hanaukyo Maid Team: La Verite is dark skinned with silver hair...

Nadia from Secret of Blue Water is pretty dark but I've not watched the anime to know if she's supposed to be non-caucasian or just very tan.

Pedro from Excel Saga is supposedly from South America.

Miyuki from Basquash! She's fun :)

Most harems seem to have the crazy monkey girl, tan and out of control, from some exotic country thrown in for fun, like Kaolla Sue from Love Hina.

There's any number of persons of color as secondary characters in Cowboy Bebop.  Some in Trigun too I think.

I'm sorry, these are probably duplicates, I didn't read the whole thread.  You are right, they are scattered and rather rare...while caucasians with brightly colored hair seem to populate Japan.

Nope, I believed he was mentioned before and he is usually the first that comes to mind since an entire episode of the series focuses on his Jamaican-ness.

Unlike other series where people are just forced to assume someone is non-Japanese but have no clue of whether they could be Black, Hispanic or Indian.

Masa-san is beginning to resemble Stevie Wonder now that I think about it...

80's Jherri curl complete with the same dorky two-tinted glasses and that horrible mustache that was also popular back then. Masa-san has 80's written all over him.

I think you are in love with Masa-san and his suaveness and are trying to cover it up.

No I am just fascinated at his uncanny resemblance to Stevie Wonder.

Do teenage Japanese girls fantasize about being swept off their feet by American R&B prodigies? Is this why Masa-san exists and is called the stealer of first kisses?

Not sure if this is the issue...to clear up who Masa is in that pic, he's in Seto no Hanayome, he's portrayed as a sexy man...or merman or whatever, and he

Yep, Brazil is mostly black people so the Anime is right to feature most of the cast as either Mulatto or Black with a few token Whites (called "Branco" there I think).

I highly disagree. Haven't been there myself but have had 3 different friends who went there and concluded the following logical sequence:

1) Brazil = Brown Babes
2) Brown in Brazil = Black + Indian or Black + White (46% of the population)
3) Black + Anything = Bubble Booty
4) Brazil = Bubble Booty
5) Brazil = Black

Perfectly Logical sentence: Because Brazil is Black there is booty. And because there is booty in Brazil, Brazil is Black. I have logically deduced that one can say Brazil = Black.

You can thank me later :) Haha ;)
