anime news top ten and other rating sites.
« on: April 16, 2009, 08:49:58 AM »
Hey, I'm an anime noob compared to most people on this forum lol.

I was trying to wach the top ten from anime news network. . Now i'm watching clannad, the only one I'm yet to watch.

I've thought all of the top 10 were excellent quality. All but 1 of my top 5 ( see sig) come from that list. :D

Was wandering what u guys think of the list?

aniDB and MAL (myanimelist.net) here. I don't check ANN.

I use aniDB for show+sub ratings, and ANN to check series trivia.

Am I the only one who doesn't watch anime based on ranks?
I look at the intro/outro on youtube, if it appeals, I watch. If not, I don't.

I can't remember, maybe I used to use rankings when I was a newer fan, but nowadays I primarily look at what appeals to me. The problem with ANN's top rankings that that newly-airing series tend to shoot straight to the top and get overrated. This happened with Haruhi, Death Note, Code Geass, Clannad, and probably some others. Then once a wider audience gets exposed to them, they tend to fall dramatically.

But generally, the rankings at ANN/AniDB/AnimeNFO/MAL are a good starting place if you want to find "anime that lots of people consider good."

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Rankings stopped mattering to me, especially after I saw the rankings that long series like Naruto and Bleach got (I don't think they suck, I just think they're overrated). Now I only go by trusted recommendations.

I go by both now. Before it was ranking.
I have used ann but have more or less switched to anidb. I used ann to see what an anime was about and how many eps it had and relations/order of continuations. But now I'm using anidb. Imo they offer more infos. ann is only used randomly.

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

I prefer to go by personal recommendation. Although incidentally, I started watching Minami-ke because of BxT's random button, so it's kind of whatever works for you.

Also, you could just ask. People here love to give recommendations that are usually spot on.

I tend to ignore "top" whatever lists, as they don't tell me anything anymore. From what I've seen, the general anime watchers like mindless action with no plot, horribly overdone melodrama and boring slice of life (not the "good" slice of life).

I think a big part of it is due to mob mentality though. People need to learn to think for themselves and not just follow what others think are the best.

i dont look at ratings, i look at the picture on anidb, read the synopsis maybe try to find a review or two see why people hated it and look at categories.

Same here. I just hangout in the forums to have some feed back. Then I check out trailers or sometimes amvs on youtube.

I just use anidb for fansub ratings.

I use AniDB, categories for older anime and its calendar to check images/description/categories of newer animes.

I don't really care what other people rate shows because their opinions don't matter. I use AniDB just to keep track of what I've watched and what I've thought about each one. I've seen enough anime to know which shows I'll probably like and which ones I won't. That and for the calender function to see what comes out and the sub group ratings/comments to choose which sub to go with.

I also just use BoxTorrents browse/offer pages, see whats new (as it tends to offer the better subbed groups) and then check it out on those anidb pages to see more in detail.

So I mainly get my 'new' anime from BoxTorrents :O

I've only used ANN's top 10 once, and that was to help me find Gurren Lagann :)

Nope I usually don't check rankings since a lot of the time i don't agree with many of the common trends in anime. I usually look for recommendations and see what other people that have similar tastes as me think of it if I think I'm interested. Then Ill usually download the first few episodes to see if I like it and if I do then Ill get the whole series.

I download, and if I like, I keep, if the first few minutes are bad, then get a different one.
