Mobile Fighter G Gundam
link0007:
Anyone else remember this anime? I remember watching it at like 3 in the morning because either Adult Swim or Toonami (on Cartoon Network) was showing it and I loved it. When I remember it however I notice that it is quite different from most of the other Gundam series that I can think of. Is it the one exception to the Gundam formula or is simply an earlier show? As I remember it it had a unique feel to it with the tournament storyline as well as the girl/romance subplot.
Also is it as good as I remember or has the rosy tinting of nostalgia once again corrupted my judgment?

G Gundam's in my "currently watching" list at MAL, actually. Borrowed the DVDs for the first half from a friend, and working through the Baka-Anime releases for the second half. I'm no Gundam expert, but afaik G Gundam was one of 3 "Alternate Universe" series commissioned to commemorate the 15th anniversary of Gundam. (First Gundam aired in 1979, so that would put G Gundam (1994) squarely in the historical middle of the Gundam franchise.) According to the DVD extras, it was also very merchandise/toy-driven, thus explaining all the outlandish robot types.
I don't know if it's the "1 exception to the rule," but it is quite different from what we would consider "normal" for Gundam. I understand that many hardcore Gundam fans dislike G Gundam, but my take on it is that it's not a mecha series and only barely a Gundam series. It's a shounen/tournament fighting anime that happens to use giant mecha in the battles. If you think of it that way (instead of expecting it to live up to the Gundam reputation), it becomes an anime like Scryed -- completely "dumb fun," cheesy, over-the-top, hot-blooded action. Not the greatest in the plot or character development departments, but it never fails to entertain.

G Gundam was the only one that ive seen that wasn't really about war!
what was the main characters name again? i remember he was crazy and gundams in this universe required strength to pilot.
i remember the BURNING FINGER! that he learned by training in the mountains?

I really enjoyed it even though it didnt have the classic gundam feel but I had no idea that it was one of 3 alternate universe series. In fact I had no idea it was 15 years from the start of the Gundam series. And I did enjoy all of the over the top action adn ridiculous super moves and such. I suppose it would piss off Gundam purists though.

I think his name was Domon or something similar to that. Come to think of it G Gundam was more like a shounen series with the training and crazy super moves. Burning finger was hilarious.

G Gundam is the most non-gundam Gundam in the series, and personally I think the worst. That said, it wasn't bad. I still mildly enjoyed it
