Keep in mind 1080p anime isn't the same as 1080p live action.

For the record... NVidia 8400 and 8600 aren't good choices.

Works well for my 8600GT though I know the GT is faster....

Then you're lucky. You should read the article about those "cards" frying motherboards and such. Absurdly high amounts too.

Are we speaking of the mobile or desktop 8600? Just wondering, because I haven't heard much negativity at all about the desktop version...

I also just ordered a 8600GTS for cheapo tower build >_< hope it's not a doozy...

My buddy had his Dell laptop replaced 5 times. The 8600 GT Mobile fried the board every time.

Mine is in a desktop. So that surely will make a difference as far as cooling and circulation goes.

@iindigo
So you're probably safe... and is that for your bros PC that you posted as having problems?

Actually, I decided to just build a cheapo machine for him. His old Dell doesn't even have an AGP slot (only PCI) so his upgrade options were severely limited. With the case, mobo, 2.8ghz core 2 duo, 2GB memory, graphics (the aforementioned 8600GTS), and a PSU it all cost $379 shipped ($359 after a couple mail-in rebates). We're planning to run either hacked OS X or Linux on it. You can find more details on it in this thread: http://forums.boxtorrents.com/index.php?topic=17649.0

Actually, the Desktop version is flawed too. You should look it up. Many people are doing what's known as the "copper trick" to try and extend the life of that flawed card. There's still problems with desktop ones. If you look up those two models and do a little research, you'll find a lot of dirt about those two cards.

It won't die as easy in a desktop, but there's still a chance of it dying.

I do believe you... Though I guess I just got lucky... Mines still runs great. Though hardware failure is rarely something that surprises me.

ATI/AMD - 1, NVIDIA - 0

'nuff said.

As an sorta/kinda ex-ATI fan, I would say that...except nVidia is just better in the high end. If you want a cheap card that will run games and last forever, grab an ATI. But lately, ATI really just hasn't impressed me on price to performance. Unless ATI starts to reach the level of the 9800 series (which is mostly an overpriced failure, in my opinion) and the way the GTX series is going, I dunno, I have a hard time recommmending ATI to the hardcore fans.

In nVidia's favor, in my experience they've generally had better drivers than ATI has. This is especially true when it comes to Linux.

ATM 4890 is quite cheap and powerful. but nvidia have better drivers. ATI vendors also have shitty warranties(except XFX).
All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.

However, if you're the cheap type, then an ATI/AMD IGP would do just fine. As mentioned earlier, AMD's IGP blows the competition away. It just totally does.
