Can't Decide
« on: April 22, 2009, 04:53:00 PM »
There are some anime for which i can't decide which fansub to archive.
Here is the list:

Asura Cryin - Chihiro or AniYoshi ( the too literal factor)

Phantom Requim - Chibi-Formula or Menclave ( both are good but which is better?)

Cross Game - ANBU or Jade ( I am leaning towards ANBU as it is a well established group and then there's the factor of upscaled HD video.)

07-Ghost - DB or YuS-Shinsen ( DB doesn't do HD)

Valkyria Chronicles - Ayako or AnY-Conclave ( A-C is too slow )

Can i get some advice?

Asura Cryin': Chihiro: better video qulaity...by FAR. And better translation, AniYoshi is WAY to literal.
Phantom Requim: can't say. Menclave IS better, but they tend to stall...A LOT
Cross Game:  DUG..ANBU
07-Ghost: nether, Shinsen Subs
Valkyria: Go for Ayako, cause the others have the same literal problem...and are slow.

Asura - I'd go with Chihiro. I looked through the two, and Chihiro has better video and more fluid speaking. Aniyoshi has better typesetting and ED karaoke.

Phantom - Chibi-Formula if you don't want to wait for a year or longer.

Cross Game: ANBU

07-Ghost: Shinsen. DB is just popular.

Valkyria: I'd go with Doremi if they don't die on it. But Ayako has done pretty good in the few episodes I've seen. Their karaoke styling is just >.<, though.

Call me crazy, but I prefer Jade's releases for Cross Game. Can't say anything about the others though.

My Picks would be

Asura Cryin - Not watching so IDK but if i was Chihiro
Phantom Requim - Chibi-Formula(to watch), Menclave (Archive...Just slow)
Cross Game - Again Not Watching
07-Ghost - YuS-Shinsen (All the way here)
Valkyria Chronicles - Again Ayako(to watch) or AnY-Conclave (Archive)
I have typed these words and you have been forced to read them.  Now you can go cry in the corner if you like :)

I'm hesitant to pick Chihiro for anything.

I'm not watching any of these shows, though, except maybe the second to last on that list.

Cute, huh?

Heh, it's just what Chihiro's been plagued with for the past 4 months. People assume it's the same as in 2008 with blinding fonts, missing lines, un-TLCed episodes, spelling errors, horrible encodes, and no TLs for OP and ED.

Just try a show we've subbed in '09 out. You may like it.

Chihiro isn't bad, yeah, they get a bad wrap sometimes, but they do a pretty darn good job and are quick with releases.  They may not be always the absolute best group (sorry Kristen) but in reference to the job they do and the time it takes(Not stuck in a QC infinit loop).  They're pretty good, Atleast give it a try, and from what i can tell on ji-hi, they are the easiest to read and the english seems to flow the best.

People need to fucking learn to try.

Anyways:
Asura Cryin - Chihiro
Phantom Requim - I'm still deciding
Cross Game - ANBU
07-Ghost - DB or SHS
Valkyria Chronicles - AnY-Conclave.

I downloaded Chihiro's version when they released the episodes ( 1-3) as i trust Chihiro more than AniYoshi. I just wanted to make sure if my decision was correct.

Now that Chibi-Formula has dropped Phantom, if Menclave continues with it, i'll follow them, otherwise it's Ayako for me.

They have undropped it:

Episode 04 was on Funimation’s site hours before it aired in Japan, somehow.
Anyhow, in compliance with our normal policy, regrettably, we’ll be dropping Phantom after episode 03. The streams will be out faster than our version, plus they’re perfectly legal. I’m personally happy the show’s been licensed and hope to see some DVDs for sale in the future.

edit: We’re considering not dropping it. Funi’s license only covers web streaming. Our logic for continuing is this: We’re slow, and not many people get our version (Desire/Ayako for speed and Conmen for achive, right?). So, really, how much ad revenue is lost by 2K people grabbing our version a week after the stream comes online? /me shrugs

edit2: It appears we are not dropping this yet. Our torrents for the PV and episodes 1 & 2 have been removed from Scarywater by request of Media Factory via BayTSP. They may or may not be rehosted on another tracker at some point in the future.

So, why did we decide not to drop when we always have in the past? Well, fansubbing isn’t any more illegal just because official streams are around. In the same way, it’s not somehow more legal when a series isn’t licensed. If the show had been licensed for DVDs, as we originally thought, we’d drop the show. Putting out a sub means putting something out that will linger on the internet for a very long time and can have a definable injury to DVD sales. However, putting out a sub at least a week after an official stream becomes available has a much smaller negative impact on the licensor’s profit. It’s been said that Funimation makes 1 U.S. cent per view. Torrent downloads for each episode we’ve released totaled under 2,000. So then, does depriving a corporation of 20USD revenue makes us evil, R1 licensor-hating pirates? I don’t think so.

I wholeheartedly encourage anyone who watches our releases to also watch Funimation’s streams. I will be (after I’ve done my part of the fansubbing so I’m not influenced by their editing and such). Not that I’m saying that watching their version makes downloading a fansub more legal, but the moral weight is lessened at least.
