Gadget in Kanon?

OK, this isn't gonna be an epic thread or anything, but just curious about something. I've just started watching Kanon, the newer version. 

There is some kind of appliance on Yuuichi's floor, what is it, a humidifier?  At first I thought it was a rice cooker, but that doesn't make sense for a bedroom floor, even for Japan.

It's been awhile since I saw that ep, but it might be a space heater.

Central heating isn't really common in japan, so stand alone heaters are pretty popular.

It's a kerosene space heater.  You don't see them often in the US and Europe, but in Japan electricity is generally 2 to 3 times more expensive, making it cheaper to use kerosene.
