Death Note had a very different and brilliant premise, and a far different way of showing the bright, bored, young man trying to change the world. And it is full of moral complications and twists and turns.
From the first episode what hooked me in was thinking of how many of us could resist using the Death Note? If someone had hurt us or our family in some way, could we keep from using it?
Also all the mental battles between L and Light kept you on the edge of your seat. I kept saying to myself "who will outwit who?"
And Ryuk was priceless with his apple fetish. :)

To be honest, I never really felt there were any moral complications.  It was pretty clear to me Light was in the wrong.  The apple fetish is more or less a support of this.  Apple = the fruit god forbid Adam and Eve to eat, but of course they defy god and eat it anyways.  Light's just like that, so arrogant he believes he's better than god at dishing out punishment.  FAIL!

well i guess you could think "what gives him the right to say whether people live or die" or "god punishes in his own ways" er somethin like that. but if i was light and you asked me what gave me the right i'd say "this notebook" "it gives me the right to say who dies". just like if you ask a person with a gun what gives him the right to take life, answer the gun. with great power comes great responsibility imagine if the punisher found this note book there would be no crime and no war.

Many people were convinced that Light felt justified at first in using the Death Note as he was only killing criminals, people he felt that the world would be far better off without, and alot of us at that point could agree with his logic. But then as with all things, power corrupts. The more he used it, the more his judgement became impaired, and he started to use it in revenge, and to further his own cause, to create the Utopia that he imagined, and one in which he would reign over as he felt he was the only one capable of doing so.

Of course, Light's not the one who eats apples; that's Ryuk.

Light is much more epic - he takes a chip, and eats it!

Seriously, half the enjoyment in the first part is seeing his face when something goes wrong.

. This Manga, heehee woops (didn't quite watch it but I don't think the Manga and Anime differs much here), made my heart beat faster and faster. It gets pretty intense, it keeps you thinking (is he gonna be found, will he kill them, will he prevail???)

This is my first anime (apart from Pokemon and first few episodes of Gundam Wing back in grade school) and I love it.  The battles of wit are just epic.  At first I was skeptical regarding the idea but now I'm hooked.  I'm on episode 21 and going strong.  As a side, since I'm really enjoying this, do you guys have any recommendations of other series that are similar?  I've been recommended Code Geass (half done downloading, going to start watching as soon as I finish Death Note) and Monster.

Yeah, Code Geass is similar to Death Note, I'd probably watch that next if I were you. The main character gets a special power, and also happens to be a genius. Uses his power and wit to fight his enemy(s). Takes an episode or two to get into it, but it's a good watch. Especially if you are a fan of Death Note.

Death Note and Code Geass are both like sweet, sweet anime candy.

I did really like Death Note, but I didn't like the ending.

That being said it's still a SUPER fun watch right up to the very end. It's just exciting to see what Light is going to do next, and how he'll react as things proceed.

I liked the ending.  I actually feel that if the series ended in another way, it would have felt strange.

Overall I liked Death Note, it was one of the anime that got me into my current high velocity stint into the anime world when it came out. Granted the "N" segment wasn't anywhere close to the "L", it just wasn't enough to take away from how good the first 2/3 of the show were.
