I don't think it was a development over time, Light acts pretty consistent throughout the series regarding women. Almost all his motives involving romantic interests were because they'd result in furthering his plans elsewhere.
As for the ending...
(click to show/hide)He does get sloppy, but he arguably relies on things he has no control over most of the series. And assuming Near knew starts getting into a "I knew that you knew that I knew that you knew" situation. It'd be a bit silly. I'd argue his fatal flaw wasn't relying on another Kira, but getting so arrogant and cocky as to allow a final showdown. He failed because he never allowed the possibility that he could fail. That's why it's so funny to see him get owned throughout the series. He never sees it coming.

Well to be fair to Light, the idea that someone like L could exist, and that he could magically pull out of his hat that, "Oh, I'm sure the reason all these people all over the world are dying is because of one man with a magical power in Japan" was pretty bs.
How could Light compete against people like that?

Was L really japanese? or did he just look like it? Was near also japanese? i know mellow couldn't have been.

L came from china, he has a tatto on his ass "MADE IN CHINA"
but seriously, he looks more chinese than japanese, and yes he explained everything, l think it made me mad at this anime because he explained every fuckin thing he did a few moments later, and why l stopped watching after ep 10 and went straight to last ep, cuz to me it was all pretty much easy to forsee the next scene n all that.
