(click to show/hide)So to those who've seen the show and want technical questions answered go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunbuster
In regards to predicting their arrival, earth coulda figured out the distance and predicted their arrival that way, especially if the other ships had to travel the same distance(which doesn't really make sense but...)then they'd just need to set something up right after the rest of the fleet returned. But most logically earth sensed them with scanners/radar and figuratively hid behind the couch right before they showed up.
Anyways everyone should watch them, best anime I've seen so far 10.1/10(diebuster)

(click to show/hide)With regards to predicting their arrival, the fleet made a near instantaneous FTL jump back to Earth using their degeneration engines. Noriko and whatshername Onee-sama were travelling at relativistic speeds, close to the speed of light, hence for them, only a short while passed, but 12,000 years passed on Earth. I.e. they return around the year 14,000 AD.
In roughly 13,090 AD, Diebuster takes place, with Nono (aka Buster Machine #7) awakening after her long sleep in a comet. She was probably built not long after the fleet returned from the centre of the galaxy, while the fear of the Space Monsters was still high. The single-digit Buster Machines were equipped with degeneration engines, allowing FTL jumps, i.e. the Buster Corps also had them since they were made to be used in conjunction with Nono. Later Buster Machines did not have degeneration engines but had the capability to use them if they were installed. Nono was probably programmed to remember Noriko's heroic actions, and as she grew more and more sentient, it was the only thing she remembered after so long.
Over time, the Buster Corps, which are self-sustaining biomechs, evolved to become more like their enemies, and were mistaken for the Space Monsters by the humans, who had thrown away their technology and science because they were afraid other civilizations might try and destroy them as well.
L'alc's Dix-Neuf (#19) is one of the oldest surviving Buster Machines, several thousand years old by the time of Diebuster.

(click to show/hide)I just find that a weird, I mean she was the 7th buster, seems a little odd to put that kind of data into a machine, also wouldn't you have just put it into the next buster instead of later models i.e. 4-6, but to do it on 7? But sure you could also reply: They may as well just inputted the data into all the later models after #3 but then wouldn't the future models also have that data, etc, etc...

(click to show/hide)Thought I added something here, so many tags...anyway, I'm sure the reason was why the buster corps started to attack the humans was because they became a threat themselves to other species with their topless. I'm sure thats what you meant by that paragraph, but when reading it through, it doesn't actually make much sense.

(click to show/hide)I just remember something on the first episode, is when 19 stopped when it recognised Nono, which could be assumed that since he has survived so long, 7+19 could still have been operational back in the days before Nono went into hibernation :o, also if he knew that why didn't he just tell Lal'C...then again he really doesn't speak verbally...
lol also when you say FTL jumps I keep thinking "For The Lose" Jumps...darn internet abbreviations!
quekmeister:
You're right about that first point, of course. Then again Gainax isn't known for having tight plots.
What's your second spoiler tag for? I can't see anything.
Haha, FTL, when I first saw online it I was wondering what it stood for.

(click to show/hide)Finally finished watching it. IT WAS AWESOME. I liked the end of DieBuster where it showed the return of Noriko and Commander Ohta.
EDIT: Added the spoiler tag
