(click to show/hide)Nono was Buster Machine #7, which means she was built not too long after Buster Machines #1, 2 and 3 sacrificed themselves to seal off the black hole while the rest of the fleet jumped back to Earth. She was probably taught the history of the conflict between the humans and the space monsters. Buster Machines with numbers less than 10 were the earliest, and by far the most powerful. Between number 10 and 20 were somewhat more powerful than those which came after, and that's why Dix-Neuf (#19) could also remember certain parts of the history (and also how Dix-Neuf got that horn/tooth stuck in his head, and also why Dix-Neuf can do the ultimate moves like Nono and Buster Machines #1 and #2).

I don't see why the time jumping is so ridiculous, most of Gunbuster takes place within a 40 year period. In all likelihood, Gainax probably didn't plan to make a sequel of Gunbuster (released in 1988), and only chose to revisit the series after fifteen years because they didn't have anything else at the time, having completed FLCL. The amazing thing is that they managed to fit the plot of Diebuster into the story with it making sense.

I agree with quekmeister. Why shouldn't she remember? She is part of the first ones and we do not know what happens to them if their abilities are sealed away or if they live in peace so they could live long.

If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. This is my favourite animes of Gainax, particularly the first installment. Epic, awesome animation, and doesn't devolve into ridiculousness as most of their longer series do.

I just finished Gunbuster. Now that is what I like seeing! Action drama at its finest. My only complaint was the black and white episode, but that's a minor issue. What an epic OVA.
(click to show/hide)I cracked on the ending. After over 10,000 years... the earth puts up the "Welcome Back" sign for them on arrival. That was... sweet :'(
