--- Quote ---Hmmm this anime wasn't up to my expectations despite being highly rated, I felt that many parts of the show had little explanations and many things just didn't flow properly, I often found myself focusing on various little things throughout each episode that made me think this is out of place. It just felt like a lot of nonsense put together. (click to show/hide)Here are a list of things I noticed that just made things weird;
-Akiyuki pretty much was kidnapped onto the ship yet he didn't really attempt to just 'leave' to return home, he just played along with the 'Oh well since I'm here...'
-At the start you first see the general/commander guy oppose to the creations of the anti-human form weapons, which makes you think he is on the good side, but later on he just seems indifferent to everything. Also includes the Tessician shamed doctor. Throughout the series, both of them seem to keep reversing roles of 'bad guy' and 'victim/pitied/sympathized' constantly changing their attitudes of 'I don't care about what happens we must carry on' to 'but think of the children!'
-Watching through it, there is the 'Northern' and 'Southern' sides that just attack one another, there wasn't really much explanation but all that you ever here is that some village/town is being bombed at which point I think I turned off at which side was doing the attacking, and the people in the anime just seem to also accept it too like "Oh is [name] village being bombed?" "Ah look, [name] ships are heading to [name], they'll probably be bombed around noon".
-It really feels that just complete randomness is happening in the plot and the reasons behind it are just randomness in itself, i.e. Haru joining the army, then she meets Akiyuki, then you think..."okay now you met him, its all fine now?" but she continues the route of join the army and practice killing (even after the episode where she felt sorry for the xam'd beings) at this point you're thinking "okay..isn't this around the time you would have quit", even though she mentioned she wanted to protect her family or something, but you know that isn't really it.
-I could probably list alot more small things that don't really flow if I watched this again, there is atleast something in each episode.

One of the things I noticed about the quality was that for some reason that the audio seemed quite low compared to many series that I have, I'm wondering why is that :/

most of your questions are answered completely throughout the series.
(click to show/hide)i dont remember exactly what the stuff with the commander was but im pretty sure it was one of those things where he opposed the development of the weapons to the like political leaders and the human weapon research he was doing was behind the scenes. So he was doing the old do as i say not as i do.
The doctor on the other hand initially was going hard for turning the girl into a monster and whatever and then when they captured the soul collector guy he changed his opinion completely because the soul capture guy is like his god kinda. If memory serves(might be switched on how the doctor was acting)

North vs south was pretty simple, One had created human form weapons, so the other one was bombing the shit out of them, since every village didnt have the human form weapons they just had to take it.

Akiyuki did initially wanna go home, but remember the part where he turned into a monster and she warned him about turning into stone again and all that fun mess and him in the first couple of days going from TAKE ME HOME to, oh shes trying to help me not die. He still wanted to go home but realized that he had to do his stuff. Which is why he ends up meeting up with the girl at the mine etc etc.

After she felt sorry for the xamd she couldnt just quit because they were using her little sister as a leverage point on her and she was facing jail time if she didnt cooperate with the commanders wishes because she had committed treason.
But that doesnt mean there werent plot holes and weird things like i mentioned above

Great OP and ED helped to push my rating  of it from an 8/10 to 9/10.

but. . .the true question is:

(click to show/hide)does haru die virgin?
was akiyuki's return real? cause it seemed fake to me. . .it seemed more of that "spiritual gathering" thingy where she sees him but he isnt really there. . .you know? like shes on LSD or something

I think they left it open to interpretation.  (click to show/hide) I believe akiyuki's return was real, but that's just because I want to believe they were happy in the end.  But, who knows.  Maybe an OVA? or is thier a Manga Out ther?
