Depends on your media player.
You can dissable ASS/SSA Subtitle rendering. Your player should use your normal subtitle-preferences then.

(anyway, shouldn't this topic be in Need Help / Playback? ^^ )

Yes, yes it should be. We also need more information to help you. What media player are you using?

Disable subtitle rendering, then you can set the default subtitle font inside MPCHC's subtitle settings.

@Arveene,
Congratulations for your recent achievement here.  ;D

Well, it's S_VOBSUB

I don't know how to rip it off to a .srt or .ass (or other common sub files)

VobSub cannot be changed, it's image sub...
Only way is to rip it with some OCR software to recognize the characters and convert it to text....

I've done that in the past, but it's a pain in the ass and a slow process...

If you are running MPC HC it's easy to change subtitle styles properties without modifying the MKV file.
while running the MKV file with styled sub right click the video then subtitles->styles...
here you can find all the styles used from the internal subtitle, modify each style as you wish and if you want to keep the modified subtitle choose  file->save subtitle

I know this is an old thread, but it has exactly what I'm looking for.

Stupid question, but how do you disable ASS/SSA Subtitle rendering in MPC? I've been looking for hours and can't find how.

In MPC-HC, enable auto-load subtitles, and then you can change properties of all the styles (dialogue font, maybe that of softsubbed karaoke and signs) via Play/subtitles/styles.
Kaoru + Aoi + Shiho = Infinity
For video playback: madVR + CCCP 2011-11-11 (use the bundled version of MPC-HC)

I understand that, but its annoying when you have to change it every time. I'm looking for a way to "dissable ASS/SSA Subtitle rendering" so it automatically loads my default one.

Right click video-subtitle-default style
This will apply your default subtitle style on all styles permanently.
You will need a new version of MPC-HC since this is a rather new feature(added after 7 Feb )
Download from here

Thanks that's exactly what I was looking for. Just a minor problem, but is there any reason why the subs are so much bigger when I use that default option? It only happens when I use the default option - if I change it manually to the same size it's fine. I can easily fix it by making them smaller, but if possible I'd like to know a fix.
