Basquash Alphabet
« on: May 12, 2009, 08:16:13 PM »
So I don't know if anyone else noticed but I can't find any topics about this anywhere on google:

The writing system in the show Basquash is just some jacked up form of the english alphabet, but it's highly artistic enough that you can't easily decipher it at first glance. I first noticed it on a sign in the bar they sometimes meet up at.

I was wanting to get an index of all the letters and perhaps draw them out in photoshop and maybe post them on wiki or something.
I'll just post a couple screenshots of the alphabet and what it says. Maybe some other people could help and go through the videos finding examples of the other letters of the alphabet.

Here are the first two I've got from episode 6:

I put the pics in spoilers to avoid thread clutter.

THE BIRTH OF BASQUASH

So for the first one I can't guess what the first word is. I know the last letter is A, and the second one looks sort of like an M, so from this and the looks of the first letter I was guessing the first word could be "Ima" as in the Japanese word for now.  Maybe someone else can come up with a better guess.

For the second one, only because of the way that the letter looks and how they pronounce Basquash in the show I have a small doubt that it might be a C instead of a Q, but I think it's probably a Q like it should be.

I think it's interesting and when I get free time I want to figure out how to make fonts and maybe make a Basquash font. O.o Maybe someone else here already knows how to do that kind of stuff though.

If you have any other examples that you can decipher, please post them!

I thought that for a second too but I just figured out it's "Data"

I'm going through episode six and from all the text I'm getting a screenshot of most all of the letters :o once you figure out a few it makes figuring out the others a faster process. Once I finish the episode I think I'll make some crude drawings of the ones I've figured out so far.

From just 4 minutes into the show I only need G, J, U, X, Z, 4, 7, 8, 9, and I think I have L and K but I'm not 100% sure. Is the girls name "Seka D Mikanda", because that's what a wanted poster seems to be saying her name is.

Iirc at every end of each episode there is written "to be continued" (ohh, how unexpected :P). Don't know if there are any capital letters...

I don't watch (or rather haven't watched) this series, but I've seen a fair few stylized alphabets from my SF reading/watching days. It looks like there's a mix of uppercase and lowercase, indicating no capitals.

Yea I was just writing everything in capital letters but I don't really see any sign of upper/lower case difference so far.

Now it seems that any official documents are in French. The only thing is I don't see any accent markers so it makes it troublesome trying to translate it with google :P

OKAY! Here are all the letters and numbers in Basquash!
I'll eventually make a nicer looking version but this picture works just fine!

So reminder:
1. There are no upper/lower case distinctions.
2. Some of the stuff on the show is written in French (without accent markers on vowels)

Good work figuring this out. It's pretty amusing, especially how they have Iceman Hotty written as opposed to what Umai puts (Iceman Hottie).

Yeah, and also the show rights her name as Sera D Miranda, instead of Sela. Crazy Japanese... I actually like the Sela spelling and Hottie spelling myself. :P
