Evangelion was unique for its time, and I feel it's poisoned that sub-genre of mecha anime somewhat. It hasn't aged well.
I, for one, am thankful Gainax has decided to go back to its bouncy, size-obsessed roots with Gurren Lagann. Now if only they'd bring out another Top wo Nerae!. Oh wait, there was/is Shikabane Hime, that's not too bad.

Oh come on, you seriously think Anno planned Eva? He's said in so many interviews that he was just 'going with the flow' and trying to mess with people as much as possible. After watching his other works, I seriously don't think he has that kind of capability.

NGE was awful because Shinji was a whiny bitch who needed to seriously die. I hate him more than any other character... ever. Seriously, if he wasn't in it, I probably would have liked it.
Some of the Eva clones have surpassed the series, sorry.
