« on: May 13, 2009, 03:43:44 AM »
Hey everyone, this was jus a question i was thinking about while waiting for my download to finish but does anyone really remember what got them into anime in the first place, i mean why anime instead of the gay american morning cartoons like scooby do or the powerpuff girls, i remember for me it was Dragon Ball Z and Yu Yu Hakashu on the AZN network befor they were released in america (yah like 6 years old and trying to read subs lol) but what did it for you?

I watched Spirited Away in 6th grade and was intrigued by all of the Japanese themes in it. Before then it was just DBZ and Sailor Moon on Toonami, but once I saw Spirited Away I started to look for other anime besides what I was seeing in Cartoon Network.

What REALLY got me into anime would probably be just random animes I saw on T.V. when I was younger.

The two that really spring into my mind were Gundam Wing and Armitage (I think it was on the sci fi channel at like, 1:00 a.m. or something like that).

Original Toonaime With Moltar as the host.  I use to hope i would get home earily enough from school in order to catch a lot of shows back then.

And those who don't know of the orginal Toonaime.  It distorys the new version and Adult Swim by miles.

original line-up in 1998 - Robotech(My first Mecha), Beast Wars: Transformers (Lame), Sailor Moon(My first Drama/wtf was that), Superfriends (sorta lame), Dragon Ball Z (anime hooker!) Edit(I almost forgot Jonny Quest was in there too)

yeah I know it started in 1997 but i couldn't drive back then and get home in time to watch so i didn't know it existed.

Pokemon was pretty fun when it was still Ash doing his thing. I'd dropped it by the time Johto Journeys rolled around.
Samurai X was the first one I seriously followed, even the last third. That series also got my sis into anime.

I believe i was looking for lara croft naked online once and i saw a hentai pick and then i started downloading hentai and then my friend was like did you watch the latest justice league episode where lex luthur made a super bad guy team to fight the justice league and then the joker came out and threw marbles at the flash and the flash tripped and slammed into a wall i think and then i was like "no".  Then i downloaded  elfen lied because i read there was nudity in it and i was hooked into anime ever since.  That and sailor moon/dragon ball airing in english on tv as well at the time.

Some of the first stuff I watched was toonami's DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho, but what made me really love anime was .hack//sign and Trigun back when Adult Swim was still awesome.

Escaflowne
Waaaay back in the day when it was airing on Fox.
Good times. Hella censored though...
It got canceled pretty quickly.

After that I bought it on DVD along with Trigun.
Life hasn't been the same since...

The first anime I ever watched were Samurai Pizza Cats, Dragon Ball and Astro Boy as a kid.  Later on I watched Sailor moon, DBZ, Escaflowne and some of the older movies that aired on the Space channel such as Venus Wars and Galaxy Express 999.  The first anime that got me into watching subtitled episodes and movies was Card Captor Sakura though, since it's movies weren't Dubbed at the time.  The theme songs for Escaflowne and Card Captor Sakura perpetuated my love for the Japanese language.  The key aspect that drew me into anime was the emotional storylines and friendship based themes that they feature.  I find that American television often lacks the emotion/friendship quality that is present in anime.

I began watching anime a few years ago, because my friend always watched anime in the school on his iPod... I started watching it with him, he showed me Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu!, and it was sooo fun, that I borrowed both seasons and Fumoffu off him... And I watched it and BAAAM, I was sold... I asked for more anime, so he gave me Fullmetal Alchemist, and I began watching Naruto and Bleach...

Sooow, that's what really got me into anime... Before that I had already seen stuff in the TV, like Pokémon and Digimon... I was also reading manga like Dragon Ball, Yu-Gi-Oh and One Piece (the best manga EVER)...

My older bro was into anime and I used to watch some stuff with him when I was younger. This was before the internetz was accessible everywhere and torrents. He would bring home bootleg VHS copies that he or his friends got from one place or another. One of my aunts used to watch anime too and I'd watch some of her VHS tapes and read her manga whenever I was over. I'd occasionally watch the stuff that I could find on American TV too. Finally in highschool a buddy showed me FLCL and Evangelion. I liked it. Didn't think much of it until way after highschool when the same buddy gave me a busted old computer in early 2003. I discovered torrents and the same buddy again was telling me about a then new series called Naruto that he liked and another one called Initial D which incidentally got us into liking, building, and owning fast cars. He linked me to animesuki and it was my first time being exposed to torrents even though they had been around quite a while before that.

This reply is way too long for you guys to read so sorry. Cliff notes: little bit of exposure to anime when younger but being a cheap bastard and being able to download anime for free with torrents is what truly hooked me onto anime.

Well for me I lived in the philippines until I was eleven, and anime is just a normal thing to be watching if you're a kid.  The very first anime I remember watching is probably Voltes Five (sorry if I butchered the name heh). Then ofcourse there was DBZ, which was realllyyy big in phil from toys to videogames to cards. When I moved to the US it was pretty disappointing that there aren't that many television channels that air anime (local channels).

I originally would say DBZ, but it was actually my best friend that got me into hardcore anime watching. It was around 1997-1998 during middle school and I came over his house during summer vacation. He was watching Naruto and GTO in Japanese on DVD. I instantly starting cracking up and did the same thing any normal person would do when watching something in Japanese for the first time :D

After me joking and laughing for almost 2 weeks I decided to let him show me what anime was all about. He let me borrow all his Real bout High DVD's and Naruto DVD's. I really liked GTO and I think thats what won me over. He didn't have the entire season on DVD so I decided to research anime and look for stuff similar or more GTO episodes so I could finish the entire series. Eventually I turned to the forums and random fan sites and asked tons of people about how I could really find alot more anime. Thats when I discovered torrents and how convenient they are :) I could go on but it's waaay to much to explain lol.

What really got me into anime was my friend. I had watched some stuff like Dragonball Z and read manga like Detective Conan when I were younger and I had kind of bad impression from it and used to tease him from watching anime and his typical answer was: "Have you seen any by yourself?"... obviously I had not seen anything good. Well after some time he managed to awaken my interest and got me to watch REC... and I've been hooked to anime ever since.

A friend of mine introduced me to Ojamajo Doremi. I watched the first season at least 3 times before I started looking for other shows. To my own surprise, I found a lot of good stuff out there and from there, I started being reasonably good at telling what show I would like and which one not.

DB, Roinin Warriars, Voltren, I watch them all back in 1984-1987 and later on I got in DBZ and Starship troopers. But What really got me into anime was Japanimation. They showed it on WFYI before going to Sci-fi channel in 1998 That was the first place I saw Fist of the North Star and Zillion Man.
