« on: May 16, 2009, 02:35:41 PM »
I'm going to make Japanese Curry today. This is what I'll be coming, or the ingredients. Any tips or help would really be appreciated.

I just follow the instructions on the box. It's not hard.

The instructions on the box are different from what's on there.

When I see it in anime, I always wonder how spicy it is.
I have had curry spices in dishes before, but it wasn't spicy at all, and I hear that curry can get very hot.
Looks easy enough to make but I have also never seen the Japanese Curry block in the stores here, but I am sure it must be available somewhere.

hmm what's in that mentioned curry block?

I just use normal convenience-store yellow curry powder

Here's my curry recipe (with chicken, though):

Ingredients:
250g fresh chicken breast
2 small onions
2 red paprika
2 middle size potatoes
2 Bananas
3-4 carrots
about 2 Table spoons of curry powder
1 1/2 l vegetable broth
1/2 can of coconut milk
1 spoon of sunflower oil
some salt, some pepper maybe some sugar

chop the chicken breast and the vegetables into small pieces, put the spoonful of sunflower oil into a big enough pot and add the chicken and onions when the oil is hot... the onions have to become glassy...then add the brothand the curry, let it cook up and then just simmer it... add the vegetables and mash the banana with a fork add it as well. Let it simmer for abot 40 minutes then turn down the heat and add the coconut milk... taste it with salt, a little pepper and maybe some aditional curry powder or sugar if the banana wasn't sweet enough until it's good.
I know it's a sweet style of curry rather than spicy but I really like it (my friends, too ^^)...I usually serve Basmati rice along with the curry.

I do the same as Morgia, except I don't add bannanas and drop in a few peppers (chilly peppers work as well in worst case) and bazilic

I would say forget about the "Japanese curry" and go with this! Although 1/2 can of coconut milk might not be enough (unless you live in the USA, where everything is oversized, than 1/2 should be enough).

I never tried the bananas, will give that a try when I'm back home. But this recipe is good :D

To be honest, the "Japanese curry" is the worst curry I ever ate in my life. Gave the curry rice three chance during my stay in Japan X_X

That looks like it could be really delicious *drool*
How many persons would you say that amount
of ingredients in the recipe serves ?

I'd say 1-2 people. 250g of chicken isn't very much.

it's actually 2l (sorry if I use the metric system...I'm too lazy to calculate it into pints) of curry in whole... with rice that's enough for 4 people...I like to cook with more vegetables than meat so I don't use a lot of chicken... but you can put in more if you feel like it isn't enough... I'd suggest you try it out with the mentioned amount first though...because even if it might not sound much 250g is 2 middle-sized chicken breasts and sliced in small pieces that's more than enough.

Ah well... 4 people...if you eat normal portions of course... but when I cook it for my boyfriend it's barely enough for 2 ^^ ... I usually have some leftovers for the next day though but those are perhaps half a portion

Edit: about the coconut milk... I looked it up in the store and our cans here have abou 200g of that really thick creamy coconut stuff... so that would be 100g of coconut cream for the recipe

^ I see. I made the mistake because I'm used to drier curries where you boil off a lot of the water to get a thicker (spicier) sauce. :D

if you like it thicker you can always use some flour or sauce-binding powder (dunno if that's the correct term) but in 40 minutes of cooking not much of the water will boil away

My recipe is to go on a CoCo's run (to CoCoICHIBANYA curry house).

Mmmmmm, so delicious... Nihon, banzai!

I have a modified version. It's a "chinese curry" but it seems kind of close to "Japanese curry" (Japanese ver is spicer and "rougher")

Coconut milk/regular milk
onions
curry powder
paprika
black pepper
potatoes
chicken
carrots (optional)

are amongst some of the ingredients I put in. The recipe varies somewhat each time i make it.

I tried a couple instant powdered ones...and yech.  Same with those instant Miso soups too...yech.

But Morgia's and other recipes sound delicious and going to give them a try (not sure about the bananas though).  Thanks.

Fuck yes, shit on a platter.

I think that is the perfect description for "Japanese curry".

...

100g cocos milk for a portion for two people, sounds like the same amount as I use.

As for the chicken, I use about 300g of chicken for 3 people, so the chicken amount is good as well :D
It's just the banana-part that is new to me, really going to try that when I'm back home.

About the salt, pepper, sugar... I use lemon as well.

Instead of the suggested banana, if you want a slight sweetness to your curry, I once made a version in which I put in pumpkin and waited for it to naturally dissolve. However, I wasn't a fan of it, and I didn't mention it in the above list of "things to put in curry".

There's a lot of varieties to the banana version... I've also had curry with mango or ananas...but I like the banana version best so that's what I usually cook and therefore I posted it
