I thought the school friend thing was quite fun to watch. Two equally reserved people trying not to expose themselves... yum.

You can't fault them?  There are tens of millions of people throughout history who have been unable to have children naturally, yet still were able to pass on everything that matters to a new generation.  Adoption is hardly a novel practice.
If pride in something as now meaningless as bloodline can drive someone to accept the multigenerational enslavement of a family's women as even remotely justifiable, that person no longer should have any right to procreate.

There is hope for those who want more, as the novel series is still going.

  So I do agree that a happy ending would have been way off base, even though I disagree with your assertion that it had a satisfying conclusion.

We will have an OVA :) Wonder what that OVA will be about ??? for the anime is actually finished, iirc. Manga-based content?

I finished the series last summer, and I loved the slice-of-life setting. The character design looks less likeable serious though. I hope I'll be able to enjoy this.
