I guess you just described what happens to many series out there. I'll call this "pulling off an Evangelion".
Sorry for that.
But there needs to be sensible explanations as to why some producers decide to rush out the ending of their series, be it economic problems or people going crazy or something like that.

That's not dramatic tension, that's excusing pedophilia. "But your honor, she's so mature for her age, I thought she was older." ;D
Dramatic tension would be if there was no obvious reason for Amon not to be interested in Robin i.e. they're the same age (or she's at least fucking legal) and, despite the mutual attraction, Amon won't express his feelings. That's what leaves us wondering "Gee, why is he being so cold?"

Why would anyone think that ending was rushed, it makes perfect sense, once Solomon has enough proof that they are doing something totally disgusting they moved to wipe them out. Very simple.

I think there would have been greater romantic tension if amon and robin were of similar ages. (and if amon was a bit more responsive). I didn't really feel as though there was much chemistry between the two.
As for the ending, it did feel quite rushed. I think they didn't develop the plot that well early on in the series, which is why it felt so rushed. Most things did make sense at the end but it simply felt as though they had dropped all the information in the last couple of episodes.
