WTF?!?!? IT IS ANIME?!?
« on: May 23, 2009, 04:03:20 PM »
Have you ever happened this:

At kid you watched something cartoon, and afterwards you notice/found out on AniDB that its anime?
It have happened to me many times:

-Nils no Fushigi na Tabi [aka. Wonderful Adventures of Nils]
-Tao Tao
-Ahiru no Quack [aka. Alfred J. Kwak]
-Tanoshii Muumin Ikka [aka. Moomin]

Also theres only that problem that none of these hasnt even subbed.. so its kinda too bad that they cant be offered to BxT.  :'(
Many of these are pretty old animes too.. :S
So how is others list?

[edit: AWWW now this brings me back some many good memories of those old good days. :D]

Great series, all of those. Brings back a lot of memories. If I ever happen to pass by the TV and see Moomin airing, I'll definitely sit down and watch it.

Just goes to show how deeply anime has infiltrated our lives, starting from our innocent childhood. Cunning bastards, those Japanese.

Although at the time I saw those the first time, I probably wouldn't have recognized even 'proper' anime if someone had slammed me in the face with it.

Heh, I remember when I first discovered that Mitsubachi Maya no Bouken(which I knew under different name, ofc) was anime, that was a surprise.

Yep..

but now when you are older I'm sure you might say: "No that couldnt be ANIME?!?" Its just so funny to think how animes has been changed from 'those old days'

Well yea.. When i was something around 10-12 year old it runned on TV Sailor Moon on SWEDISH DUB! :D and it was really funny to watch it..

But it was pretty normal that all those old 'animes' were dubbed into your own language. :P

The first one I remember running into was the movie "Little Nemo". I watched it when I was just a little guy (somewhere around 4 or 5), and while I liked it, I thought it was just a cartoon. Years passed, and I forgot about it. One day a few years ago, for some reason or another, a memory from it popped back into the forefront of my mind. I had forgotten the name and it was driving me nuts, wondering exactly what it was.

At some point, the possibility of it being an anime crossed my mind, since the movie seemed a tad off the beaten path when compared to typical American animation. A few months ago I posted here on the BxT Forums inquiring about it, and indeed, it turned out to be an anime. I then proceeded to get myself a copy and post it on the BxT tracker.

Another one was Sailor Moon. Once again, when I was young I saw an episode or two on TV at somebody else's house. I thought it was just another cartoon, but its art struck me as unusual (it's why I remembered it), and years later when I got interested in anime I figured out that it, too, was an anime.

EDIT: Oh yes, just remembered a more recent one: The Galaxy Express 999 movie. I had watched part of in on the SciFi channel some time in the late 90s/early 00s, thinking once again it was "just a cartoon". It sprung to mind a year or so ago, and upon investigation found that it was an anime.

Naturally; We were just little children, after all. Some of us couldn't even read by the time those aired.

Of course, the reason why they haven't been subbed up to this day is that they are still watched almost solemnly by children...

Moomin is a special case, I think. It's really Finnish, but has Japanese producers, which makes it an anime per definition. This was one that surprised me at first, but when I looked into it, it just made sense.

I can't think of anything else right now. It's rather the opposite, stuff I've thought was anime, but really wasn't. Like Shagma.

I remember seeing a little bit of Speed Racer, but my parents didn't approve of the violence, so I never got to watch more than 1 episode, I think.

There was violence in Speed Racer?!
Oh yeah, that used to be a big part of my childhood, I'd get home from school right in time to watch it every day. Had no idea it was anime.

When I was very little, I remember watching a show that had a white lion, and I cried because he got seperated from his family. It was a re-run then, and was poorly done. Years later, I found out it was Kimba the White lion (that's what it was called when I saw it) and it was anime. Most of the stuff listed here, I haven't heard of before except of course, Sailor Moon and Transformers.

Many different versions of muumins have been produced in many different countries (even in the Soviet Union if I'm not mistaken) and it has been especially popular on Japan so no wonder theres an anime version of it too, but thats propably not the version you've seen as kids.

Maybe not, but the art style was very similar from what few Japanese clips I've seen. Maybe they had both(?) versions.

If that counts, you could also mention Power Puff Girls Z.
