My Intel Atom box has been up for 4 months straight. Never had to reboot the W2K3 PDC for quite a while...

However the VM's running on that W2K3 PDC gets rebooted once every week or so...

Have one system that's been up about 8 months. It runs as a file server and hosts a couple of odd apps like my IRC session, my IRC session been connected now for over 6 months. System runs under BSD.

The backup server that is running is still on since it was built and that was about a year now

3 and a half years, the system is running a web server, file server, mysql server, SVN server, running on Debian 4.
P3 800MHz, 2GB RAM

As for my desktop PC the one i use every day a year and a half so far, the only time it is off
is when the power is out, dont have UPS on my desktop.

WoW! And I thought running it for nearly a week was insane! Probably the most for me is @ 6-7 days or so of it always being on, no sleep/hibernate either.

Another major factor in keeping it off for me is the fact that my parents will flip out at the electric bill every time cause of how long the comp is on, especially when not in use over night seeding/leeching.

Don't let them fool you the PC doesn't use a lot of power.
In my apartment i have 4 computers, 2 constantly on, 1 doesnt have a monitor,
the other monitor is off if not used in 5mins, and 2 laptops those are
on all day one uses my sister, the other my friend, and the electric bill is about 30euro's a
month, but that's in my country so it's not much

Haha well I can't say I know every little detail but apparently ever since my "obsession" with technology increased where I was staying indoors more often and using the TV for console games and the computer a lot more then before, the electric bill raised from @$160 to $190 now or so...

Also because of that I can't have 2 things on at the same time, between the desktop, laptop and tv with console games. Bah!

I had to do a 100 page report in my "Science and technical report writing" college class on "green computers". Basically, my teacher was completely against helping the environment in any way so the only thing I could really use in an argument for the "green computers" was that it would save money in electricity bills. Last time I did the research, leaving your computer on all day, nonstop, never turning it off, with a 19" LCD monitor as apposed to doing the same thing with the more energy efficient "green computer" was only saving $90+ a year. Screen savers save absolutely no extra energy; however, sleep mode/hibernate use just a little over the energy used if the computer were turned off, and turning off the monitor when not in use reduces energy usage by about half.

My File Server was up to about 7 months once then I decided to upgrade the OS.

Was Running Ubuntu 6.06LTS then upgraded to 8.04LTS

Now I reboot once a month to install updates since its now both a file server and my torrent machine.

True, that does make me feel better. But I'm still pissed about the other thing cuz all the Windows Fan Boys will use it against the Unix guys as if it were fact.

pretty much what everyone else said if you shut monitor off your fine, especially if you have it going into sleep mode

Additionally HP-UX, Linux, NetApp NetCache, Solaris and recent releases of FreeBSD cycle back to zero after 497 days, exactly as if the machine had been rebooted at that precise point. Thus it is not possible to see a HP-UX, Linux or Solaris system with an uptime measurement above 497 days.

Why do some Operating Systems never show uptimes above 497 days ?

The method that Netcraft uses to determine the uptime of a server is bounded by an upper limit of 497 days for some Operating Systems (see above). It is therefore not possible to see uptimes for these systems that go beyond this upper limit. Although we could in theory attempt to compute the true uptime for OS's with this upper limit by monitoring for restarts at the expected time, we prefer not to do this as it can be inaccurate and error prone.

Why does my uptime go back to 0 after 198 days ?

The Linux TCP stack uses the low 32 bits from the system uptime timer, and this timer, in recent kernel releases, runs at 250Hz. This means that the timer value wraps around to 0 after roughly 198 days. Although we could in theory attempt to compute the true uptime for OS's with this upper limit by monitoring for restarts at the expected time, we prefer not to do this as it can be error prone.

Why do you not report uptimes for Linux 2.6 or FreeBSD 6 ?

We only report uptimes for systems where the operating system's timer runs at 100Hz or less. Because the TCP code only uses the low 32 bits of the timer, if the timer runs at say 1000Hz, the value wraps around every 49.7 days (whereas at 100Hz it wraps after 497 days). As there are large numbers of systems which have a higher uptime than this, it is not possible to report accurate uptimes for these systems.

The Linux kernel switched to a higher internal timer rate at kernel version 2.5.26. Linux 2.4 used a rate of 100Hz. Linux 2.6 used a timer at 1000Hz (some architectures were using 1000Hz before this), until the default was changed back to 250Hz in May 2006. (An explanation of the HZ setting in Linux.)

FreeBSD versions 4 and 5 used a 100Hz timer, but FreeBSD 6 has moved to a customisable timer with a default setting of 1000Hz.

So unfortunately this means that we cannot give reliable uptime figures for many Linux and FreeBSD servers.

Production Server: Redhat Enterprise - 228 days. Shutdown for preventative maintenance. Current: up 15 days, 4:49, 1 user, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
Windows - about 2 months.
Linux, Slack 10.x - current: 16:57:57 up 107 days, 1:15, 1 user, load average: 0.12, 0.03, 0.01 ( This system only shuts down on power outages. I don't have enough UPSs on hand to get this system on the "uber" program. )

I don't actually use that for anything, but it only draws 8 watts so I leave it on to make uptime records.
