I agree. never shut my laptop or desktop down fully unless they crash or i need to do updates. its either hibernate or stand by every time i hit the power switch

Some say this information is useful for hacking the computer. At the very least it's useful if you found a way to crash or reboot the computer... the uptime will tell you if you're successful (versus a port block or other network failure)!

I wouldn't count a router box as a real system. Those are designed to be failsafe and infinite-running. If you counted those - hey, I've got a couple years under my belt with my Secure Computing "computer" - hey - it has a shell, I can connect to its linux install. It just happens to be a pure engineered system with zero moving parts.
The "hacking" information I'd glean from someone's uptime - is as follows:
- How valuable of a target is this person's system?
Any of us with 1 year of uptime - are a pile of gold in the hacking/botnet arena. The ideal system - is one that is:
- Powerful
- Good reliable internet connection
- Always on
- Rarely attended
Really - out of that months or years of uptime that some people might have - how often are you sitting there at your system? Not much. That's the way my big uptime systems are. So, yeah - it's useful information.
You've got prime targets. :)

My desktop runs WinXP 24/7 because it's a file server for all of my anime, music, and movies. It goes down quite frequently because I have automatic updates enabled. However all of my stuff automatically starts as services so I usually don't notice for a day or two until I want to sit down and game a bit ^_^ For a while it was running Arch Linux though and it didn't have a second of downtime for like 6 months. Oh, and my router & modem both currently have an uptime of 9 months (the power went out.)

Nice
my laptop has now been running for about 3 weeks now nonstop. Ram usage has steadily been climbing the entire time too, but i think that can be blamed on firefox with the 640Mb and growing footprint xD
