Perfect Blue: http://i44.tinypic.com/fog6ee.png
Chihiro: http://i44.tinypic.com/25zqiqb.png

Chihiro encode has less dotcrawl, less noise, smoother lines, better colors, is sharper, and didn't miss 4 pixels of cropping on all 4 sides.
Their video has more character; their colours aren't on steroids (compare shadow colour), but the lines are more 'there' (look at Ritsu's hair line; Mio's hair and jawline), though I daresay their video isn't much filtered at all (besides logoaway or whatever).
You mean their pre-encoded raw they re-encoded. :p Only the japanese have a good filter to get rid of the logos. That's how you can tell that the chihiro is from a transport stream, perfect blue is from a pre-encoded raw.

The lines look like fastlinedarken(thinning=0) with some aliasing from poor h.264 settings from the japanese encoder combined with too low of a bitrate. This raw may have originally been like 140 MB by the looks of it.

FYI, the colors are correct on the chihiro version. It's a SD show, and as such it needs the standard def color matrix applied. If you don't, you get the Perfect Blue colors.

If you like it, then I'm not one to stop you from DLing it. But from my eyes, it has issues.

Quote
Their k-timing is off, and their logo bleeds at least 1/2 a second.
Their karaoke timing or effects are a bit slow.. the logo bleeds at scene changes.

It's the timing. You don't time school letter by letter. >.>

Perfect Blue also copied the Chihiro OP lyrics word for word, and at least the ED romaji.
The TL in the OP and ED is quite similar to Chihiro's but not word for word; I don't know If they copied and then modified it. The romaji, I haven't gone over it, but it should be the same for everyone now that the single is out.
I saw the following line in the OP
A "guys forbidden" notebook, a diary bound by love.
This line would never be able to be duplicated by coincidence, as it was here.

ED romaji I could tell because we made a mistake of writing Yaba as Yabai, and they did too.

It was a copy, maybe slightly modified.

I completely forgot that K-ON! is an upscale.. in that case, I guess the lines just aren't supposed to be fuzzly sharp like they appear to be in P-Bfs.

I guess they got the script from Chihiro and at least some of episode 2 is from Coalguys.

Back to Chihiro for now..

Ohai.

We seem to have agreed that Frostii's BD would replace Chihiro's TV-rip, but lo and behold! no one seems to have jumped on this.  They even addressed the localization concerns with an alternate subtitle track, and the only other ones who are doing Blurays are Chihiro (who seem to be distracted with other things) and THORA (who are only doing 1080p, and incidentally, are 1 episode away from finishing).

Now, I'm in the process of cleaning up my terrible mess of K-On! files, so I'll have these by tomorrow, hopefully.  If no one beats me to it (or reminds me of some terrible reason we don't want these) I'll have them upped by the end of the week.

>.< I just noticed that.  No, they haven't.

Volume 7 came out at the end of January, but it's probably a lower priority than their currently-airing shows, although I can't imagine why...

Why would that be? Chihiro's 720p HDTV version was never uploaded, only the 480p and XviD versions were.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

Perhaps Frostii's or someone's 720p/BD instead of DTV upscale of which a non-upscaled version exists.

I never really thought of Frostii ever replacing Chihiro, as they are considered separate categories. In my mind, I always had it like this:

A - 1080p - Chihiro, unless Thora does the specials.
B1- 720p - Frostii
B2- 480p - Chihiro
C - XviD - Chihiro

THORA will do, but we don't know when, it may take some time ::), but since frostii released a batch alredy, i think they are working on it
For 720p and 1080p releases, i think THORA is the best group now, they quality is simply marvelous, it worth the wait for Darker than Black and i'm sure i will worth for K-ON!.
I dislike Chihiro since their poor quality in the images of Sekirei

PS.: THORA is on episode 12, but released only at IRC

THORA is overrated and Sekirei has NOTHING to do with K-On!
Using that logic, I can find one bad THORA encode and dismiss the whole group right? ::)

Doesn't THORA use Frostii's subs for their releases? Wouldn't it just be more logical to just use Frostii's Blu-Ray releases?

Even if the quality would matter that much, THORA only uses the non-localized version, while Frostii's releases have both a non-localized and a localized version, right?

If THORA did the extras, then 1080p goes to the group.

Thora's encode is source + gradfun2db. Maybe a bit of sharpening if it's native 720p. Their encodes here are really not much different from Chihiro's (Starting episode 3. I'm re-encoding 01-02 tomorrow, actually).

Frostii's subs are used in Thora's, Chihiro's in Chihiro's. And it's generally accepted that Frostii's subs are better than Chihiro's. However, unless Thora actually does the BD specials in 1080p, they are going to be missing content that could be gained by taking Chihiro.

tl;dr - I think if Thora does the specials they should be taken, regardless of how unethical I think it was to encode a BD using Frostii's subs when Frostii did their own. But if they do not, I think Chihiro should.

I think THORA used the localized version for the first few episodes since the group released before Frostii released theirs.

If you don't substantiate your claims with evidence and screenshots, we are going to ignore your opinion.

I was just expressing an opinion about what i think is the release with the best quality for the people who leech from here, but i'm just too lazy to post pictures and start an arguing about it, since i download from the groups site and i'm here only to help seeding.
If you guys are happy with Chihiro i will not try to change your minds, again, i have better things to do and i would be only bicthing you.

btween: Frostii is releasing in 720p, and THORA use their subs, but for 1080p releases in order to not steal the public that wats a 720p version, and they say at the site when they use someone else subs.

and my thoughts for this ethical/unethical matter: if someone uses your subs, it means that they can't do a better translation, giving the proper credits, it is an honor in my mind, but again, i don't wanna start an arguing here, it is just my opinion, you guys taking it or not will not change my life.

Guess i'm just a THORA fanboy. :P
