« on: May 31, 2009, 10:41:18 PM »
Where do you buy it at? I'm mainly interested in getting Sailor Moon, although it's expensive as no other.. >_> Except for buying it bootleged, which I already did of the first season, I wouldn't mind, except the audio quality sucks..

Anyway, where do you buy your anime?

I never really understood the point of buying bootlegs. The money typically never goes to the company as it is, so you're better off just downloading it and burning it to DVD yourself lol. I have been tempted to buy bootlegs before, just for the art, but I haven't been able to bring myself to do it though.

I usually order my anime from Amazon Marketplace because they usually have a pretty good deals on Used items (even though it's considered Used, all of the anime I have purchased from it has been nearly brand new), but for out of print and highly popular titles such as Sailor Moon, the prices are high no matter where you go. I did a search on Amazon for Sailor Moon and the DVD sets are pricey. Some of the singles aren't too bad though, same with VHS.

I also order from TRSI, typically their Bargain Bin when I can get things that Amazon has priced higher.

There's another thread like this from a while ago, might wanna look that one up.

amazon.com
amazon.co.jp
rightstuf.com
play-asia.com

I personally would purchase the ones I really like, and as long as they are not released/licensed by the companies that dislike fansubbing. We already know who they are. I don't support them, and never will support them.

I've just started watching anime, seriously anyway. What companies are anti-fan subbing? I don't speak/read Japanese which kinda makes it hard to buy imported anime unless it's english... haha. (BTW, I didn't know the seasons of Sailor Moon I bought was bootlegged, and didn't until recently until I thought it through.)

All of them. Seriously. :)
Of those which actively try and stop fansubbers though, Funimation is the only one left which has teeth, since CPM's filed for bankruptcy and ADV's distribution division is dead and gone.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's a bootleg.

Actually, the audio quality was pretty bad on the legitimate releases of Sailor Moon S1 and S2 to begin with. Since you're not going to find reasonably-priced legitimate copies of those two seasons, I'd recommend getting the KAA rips.

I mainly buy from rightstuf.com, amazon.com (marketplace for used items), and Best Buy / bestbuy.com. Other sites that I've used in the past or could recommend are:

deepdiscount.com
dvdpacific.com
animecornerstore.co m
animenation.com

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

It appears that they cleaned up the audio quality in the english dubs. I knew I had heard some clear episodes, but most of the subs were flat. ya know?

I normally go pick up things at the local Best Buy.  But you can't find Salor moon there.

I would say try Rightstuf.com  They are normally pretty good.
I have typed these words and you have been forced to read them.  Now you can go cry in the corner if you like :)

I tend to do my shopping at Cons or on Craigslist. Dealers at Cons are usually pretty cheap already, and can usually be talked into a good deal near closing time on the last day, especially on larger purchases.

CL, well, as anyone who's used it can attest, CL can get you anything for any price, especially if you don't mind buying it used (which I don't.)

I generally don't puchase domestic DVDs. Why pay good money for dumbed down translations, standard definition video, and a dub I'll never watch?

When it comes to buying online, I've purchased mainly from animeniacs.com. Their "imports" section is mostly bootlegs. I haven't purchased anything in a few years though.

...and as to why anyone would purchase bootlegs? Well, I have a ton of them. My parents refused to upgrade to broad band internet until the last year and a half I lived with them. When they finally upgraded, they got 512K DSL. DVDs traveling by USPS are faster than 512K DSL.

I try to buy US released versions even if I already have a good version since I think that I should, as much as possible, encourage US releases.  I'll admit that has gotten me some pretty poor material on occasion, but such is life.  I'm well past being a student, so funding my obsession isn't as tough as when I was one.  I tend to use Amazon or Rightstuf for online buys mostly.

I luckily live near Japantown in San Francisco and there is a pretty good video store, Japan Video, there where I've bought several of the series I have.  They have a pretty good selection and don't limit themselves to dubbed.  Nice Hentai :o section as well.  The Kinokuniya Bookstore has a whole floor of manga with a pretty decent English section.  If you're ever in SF or live nearby, check them out.  There's a food spot in the Mall which sells pretty authentic taiyaki.

As mentioned by many above -Rightstuf .
They have very good deals in the Bargain bin and even though it said they may have scratches and dents, the stuff I have bought has been just like new.

$6 for a anime dvd is money well spent-burgers can run more ;D

Vancouver has a pretty big Asian populous so it's not hard to find a Sakura Media store around here. They have anime, manga, anime themed bags and other crap.
right now they're selling some very cute Fruits Basket plush characters though.

When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons and make super lemons.

hate to admit but l rarely buy anime or mangas, in my country it's not very popular, but it becomes popular slowly with the help of cartoon channels like Cartoon Network and Jetix (formerly FoxKids) wich airs some of the anime but nothing special, there are sites l can purchase anime from and the money goes to the makers l think, mostly at least, but there isn't much of a selection so l am forced to download and burn, sigh, l'd blow up my government for making a raid on Dragon Ball Z episode where bulma shows off her breasts, they pretty much banned anime/manga, altough banned is not the term, they made it evil, so most parents don't fucking know what actually happened, funny thing we made a raid on raiders and used their own clip to bann them, they showed a bookshelf of some bitches son who had the DBZ manga with that scene, and she trashed it live, what we DID see also on that shelf was no other than Bible Black DVD set XD we rofled at that stupid bitch on the internet, and the raid stopped, but still, anime and mangas arent as popular in my country but there are cons and ppl do go to em, the yarent as big as in other countries due to lack of goods. also l blame translation to our language cuz sometimes l saw so mistakes l couldn't fucking watch the anime anymore and had to DL from internet >.<

so there is my story, can't buy good stuff cuz there isn't much to buy from what l don't have already.

l once asked if the company l bought from (they also make translations witch are good l think) if they are gonna release Spice and Wolf and some other titles, the yreplied that they cannot untill it is licenced, so fuck em :P

I tend to use Amazon...

The Kinokuniya Bookstore has a whole floor of manga with a pretty decent English section. If you're ever in SF or live nearby, check them out...

when i do make purchaces, if the product is still being sold, i use Amazon.

and here in Seattle, or Tacoma if go north an hour, we have the same bookstore inside the Uwajimaya Grocery Store, which is the best place for Asian imports of all kind. the manga/anime section is half the store alone, and you can get food after you shop, if you're ever in Seattle.

I also am a rightsuf supporter, I just pre ordered the Gauken Alice complete set, so I can not wait until it comes in,  and If I cannot get a DVD with at least english subs, well I just do it myself....   once you do it once or twice, you will have no problem subbing a show, it just takes a little time

and sadly 99 percent of the DVDs I want are only in japan with out subs, so I have been busy
