Actually Saber always has to start out like that, even in the original F/SN. This is because various traumatic events towards the end of her actual life (as shown in the VN) made her severely doubt her own decisions, her ideals, and her way of life.

Kiritsugu couldn't have given less of a fuck about her personal issues, and so she decides to just focus on winning the war.

What Shirou did, on the other hand, is not humiliate her but give her space to think about some of those issues. He manages to drive in the point that her perception that rulers need to have an aloof and solitary life is ridiculous (which it is).

Sure Shirou's whole chivalry thing is way too overbearing, but that isn't what Saber is drawn to. In fact she repeatedly denies his help throughout each story arc. She's drawn to being treated like an actual person and friend. That's a treatment she never got during her lifetime.

People seem to forget that at the end of it all she's a 16 year old girl who never had any friends. If at the end of it all she decides that she wants to try living like a normal person, is it really that hard to believe? It doesn't mean she's stopped being a proud warrior, just that she's changed her stubborn attribute towards really getting to know people, something she earlier considered a luxury meant for commoners.

Shirou is a pretty reasonable and sensitive guy overall. But once again, yeah, his "chivalry" is fucking annoying.

It really doesn't matter if the VN was this or that or that series had another piece of information. Stop bringing it. It doesn't count.

Shiro did not. Her desires were invalid and replaced with the right ones, Shiro's.She was never treated like an actual person. She was treated like a girl and in this context it is less than an actual person.
Her entire existence became about him. Pleasing him. I think I was 16-18 when I first saw Fate and it still made me sick watching it unfold.

If you insist on bringing up the VN, I'll remind you that her character's slaughter is even more pronounced. At least the part I could play. I couldn't finish it.

1. That's the point of every Servant's existence in the War. It's also something that sickens Shirou. Naive as it might be, he wants Servants to be able to live as people in their own right...

Wow, I can't believe someone actually thinks what you think. Finish it or stop arguing. What are you basing all of this on? The anime? You think just watching everything that has been released up to this point will tell you anything about Saber? The visual novel has your answers and it will explain why Shirou is the way he is. He's the complete opposite of Kiritsu (spelling?). Shirou is a terrible character in the Fate Arc and not many people like him. He's pretty bad ass in UBW and he's the highlight character in HF. He's one of the reasons why I want to see HF so badly, besides seeing the Alter characters (including Saber Alter) and seeing how Sakura got tortured so badly by her family.

I'd like to point out one thing though.
Unlike with many other stories, FSN entirety, is all about details.

Saber was lucky to become Shirou's Servant in the sense that he literally made her think about herself for once, because she was dead set on serving her people and her master. But if it was up to me I would do it differently. She was also unlucky to be his Servant because of his idiotic ideology.

If Saber landed in the hands of Rin or Iliya, or anyone else, nothing would be solved.
First of all, she was lucky to be Kiritsugu's Servant in the first place, because he treated her like she desired to be treated. On the Other hand Iriasviel treated her as a dear person, and for good reason, which made an even greater impact on Saber's and Shirou's relations.

It doesn't matter who she was during life, what maters who she became after meeting Shirou.
