I achieved an interesting experiment today with one of my friends. He had been bugging me for quite a while this past year to make some music using Fruity Loops so I started playing around with it and have been doing a few songs here and there. Every time I sent him something I made he would start out by saying 'This is great.....but..." and then continue to basically insult it. I went about two months without making anything new and finally he asked me if I had anything for him so I played a little trick. I told him I had been working on a massive project and was just about to finish it.
Of course, I hadn't been working on anything at all. I took a professional Japanese OST song, ripped out all the information about it, renamed it, and sent it to him saying it was my greatest work yet. Sure enough he says 'This is great....but..." and continues insulting it claiming it started too slow, or this instrument didn't fit, and the beat wasn't quite right. I did this over three different times with three different OST files and got the same result each time. Finally, on the last file I sent, I sat there listening to him insult it for over an hour about the stuff he 'claimed' was wrong, and then I said "Listen, I know you think there is all this stuff wrong with it, but guess what. It's a professional song performed by professional Japanese musicians, sold along with an OST...for money, and people buy it. In fact, the past 3 songs were as well." After a very long pause he said something like "That's the difference in music. When you start making it people say you are shit, but when you start making money with it then it doesn't matter what they say because your are THE shit."
Needless to say, I achieved my goal of exposing his poor criticism. We had a good laugh and I know not to take any advice from him anymore.
