xchiamiov edit: this was split off from this thread

I decided to make a questionnaire specifically targeted towards users of BxT - if any would like to voice their opinion. Staff, please feel free to weigh in on Q#9 about Crunchyroll.

USER QUESTIONNAIRE: BxT

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?

4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?

7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?

 Thanks for your time.

PS - is there somewhere better I might post the user questionnaire?

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?

I have been into anime ever since i knew what "anime" was compared to cartoons.  I didn't make this realization til probably early high school (right around when i joined boxtorrents in '03).  I was just seeing on tv some shows were just better and actually followed a story line and i found out that most of them were "anime's" but i really didn't have the money at the time to actually purchase dvd's.  So I started to download them (first on kazaa) then on torrents after i found out about torrents in 2003.  I really enjoyed being able to sit down and get away from anything and get absorbed into an anime series. This was a great vent at the time for my free time and it actually helped me meet people who had similar addictions.  I then wanted to contribute to what was the community that enabled me to watch these series's which happened to be Boxtorrents.  I was a very active participant on the forums to talk about series and just shoot the wind (in the spam *MAPS* section of the forums).  I then became a moderator on these forums to help keep things under control since back then, the forums were super active (too active) and needed some moderation because the community was booming.  I was the spammiest moderator that loved MSPAINT because I had nothing better than that for images, and images worked sooo much better than black and white text.  (EXAMPLE)
(click to show/hide)
But i really wanted to keep things active but under control, but now, im not really even a moderator, just a lifetime member who has been here longer than almost everyone (i was the 53rd member to sign up for this site, out of over 38,000 members) but i still try to keep active to see where the site is going.  (background complete!)

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
Box allows the users to download entire series in 1 go, instead of each individual episode.  At the beginning this used to be the only site that actually did that.  This was also one of the only sites that had exclusively anime all in once place.  Easy to find.  I love the community most of all, since it seems overall, everyone is just super kind and very willing to help, which really, you don't find in the forum communities very often.  You usually find a bunch a douchebags who just will do anything to 1 up you and everything you do.  The community has been holding together forever, I'm still in contact with most people of every generation of boxtorrent members.  Especially the super cool ones :-P.   I do enjoy what this site does, and would never leave it.  I may not download as many torrents anymore, like i used to, but I'm more apt to purchase anime since I can now afford it, which would of never been the case if I couldn't get into it while i was younger.

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?

I have so many members that i love, and would do so much for.  There are a lot of us that are a pretty tight knit group, that really would help each other out if they needed it.  There are many members that all of us have been gotten quite close to through the talkings on this site and then beyond this website.  I have no clue who i would be as a person if I have not met some of these people.  Their opinions and conversations helped shape who I am today and I'm proud to say that.

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?

Hi. I'm an aspiring high school student who plans to (or wants to) spend the rest of his life as a tank driver in Iran or somewhere. I'm not Iranian, though, and is not diligent when it comes to punctuation and grammar when using English. I read random stuff off the internet (around 20-30 articles and blogs of various topics each day) when I have time and am an avid video gamer. I got hooked into anime when on a particular day spent browsing the web (just this year) some random image of anime girls started to make me feel hotter than real women made me feel. During the early days of my 'addiction' I used to watch anime that featured attractive female protagonists, like Elfen Lied, Spice and Wolf, and Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, all of which are considered masterpiece by international standards. But ultimately my passion belonged to military themed anime. One of my favorite animation movie is The Sky Crawlers, which features genetically enhanced, immortal, permanently adolescent cloned pilots shooting each other down flying in aircraft derivative of WWII-era aircraft for no other reason than to entertain people like me. (that's part of the movie's plot; simulating war for people's enjoyment) It's not very popular though; it's trying too hard to be anti-stereotypical and cinematic that people tend to avoid it. Other anime series that I like are Gunslinger Girl and Ghost In The Shell. Both series deal with law enforcement and military police. That's not to say that I particularly advocate law and order; it's just that the series happened to invoke a military-oriented storyline that actually made sense. What better reason is there to use violence than using it for the government?  ;)

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)

I use BxT mainly for the forum. I also download some anime from BxT but I don't leech heavily because if I break my download/upload ratio I can't post here. (I think)

What I like about BxT is the forum. It's more informative than other torrent sites and provides better and quicker feedback than anime rating sites such as ANN and Anidb.

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?

I've seen worse. People of BxT are as diverse as people of anywhere else. I have no difficulty in tolerating the less desirable forum members, and I believe other forum members are also tolerant of me.

The kind of members I like are those who I can trust to give a faithful review of a particular anime series. I don't really like fanboys who give shitty reviews. I guess that's the main thing the online community BxT has to offer to me; (not the shitty reviews!) easily accessible information regarding anime. At least it works better than Wikipedia.

4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?

I use BxT for the forum, and it's not my main source of anime torrents so it isn't very important whether it's public because there are other public trackers and I don't care if it's private because I would have registered anyway. It's not a source of nuisance to me.

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?

I don't like forums that I need to pay to use or is spammed by ads, so I wouldn't.

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?

I haven't donated anything to BxT. I'd donate if I thought it'd benefit me somehow.

7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?

I'm not an adopter but if I did become an adopter in the future it would have been because I felt I could somehow benefit from becoming one.

And I certainly wouldn't do it just for sake of promoting piracy, no!  :D

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?

Mostly ambivalent. I might miss it, but I know I can find other anime forum somewhere else if BxT is unreachable to me, so it wouldn't worry me too much.

I've watched around three dozen anime series over the past 2 months, and only half dozen of them are from BxT. I have other sources to download anime torrents from, so BxT is dispensable.

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?

I've never used Crunchyroll. In fact, I've never heard of it before.

Thanks for your time.
   Allan

You're welcome.  ;D

PS - is there somewhere better I might post the user questionnaire?

In General Discussion subforum, maybe, but it's not for me to decide....

Answered some questions that weren't in the staff questionnaire and still applied to me.

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
The quality, the collections. BoxTorrents was what I had been searching for for ages as an otaku. It carried loads of anime and such, and was simply like paradise to me.

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?
People need to learn to search. Even if it is Yahoo search (though I recommend Google).

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?
We occasionally do, actually. When Box is struggling to pay for servers, we have one ad on the side. People will small monitors won't be able to see it. And no ads will go on forums, mind you. Just the site.

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?
I don't have money to donate, so I contribute more through uploading and seeding.

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?
Group together with the rest of the staff, and we'll create JarudinTorrents.

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?
I like crunchyroll more than I used to now, because they are doing things legally, rather than making money off fansubs. No idea about the ToS, because I don't use CR much. I have an account though.

As with Southie, I'm answering a few questions I didn't in the staff questionaire.

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
I can always find things (as long as they're not on the blacklist), and they're always seeded.  A major plus is that Jaru has really done an excellent job on this site, so I actually _enjoy_ using it.  When you spend time studying usability, design principles and such, you tend to get rather annoyed at crappy websites.

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?
Most of "the community", I think, stays in the forums where I don't tread, so I generally just interface with all of the super-helpful ones.  You should be able to guess my opinions on them.

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?
Hell yeah.  Besides, I've got Adblock Plus.

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?
I haven't given any money because I'd rather spend it on tuiton and rent, as well as other causes I'm committed to.  If Box says he needs money, though, then I'll help as much as I can.

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?
:'(

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?
They stream subtitled anime, which is cool, I guess.  I can't trust streams to always be available, though, (Funimation's video portal has been down for some three days now) so I prefer to keep copies myself.  Thus, I don't find myself visiting CR very often.

We might split this off and move it to General.  It'll be cleaner if we do it, though, than you creating a new thread.

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
I'm using BxT mainly to get older encodes (which tend to be dead torrents elsewhere), exclusive encodes (e.g. 3xR and neo1024), and rarer torrents (chilibert). It is also noticeably faster downloading from BxT than from elsewhere.

Quote
3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?
In general, they tend to be more helpful than on many other forums and sites I've been. I'll keep it at that, since if I go on it would easily fill at least 10 paragraphs.

Quote
5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?
There used to be ads here, lol... until they started triggering browser warnings. As a paid service, if it is cheap enough I would probably still use it.

Quote
6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?
Time contribution is enough for me :)

Quote
8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?
That would be terrible :\ I don't have the time and resources to do what Box did, but we still have the IRC channel to get something organised ;)

Quote
9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?
Crunchyroll serves a need, and I'm not going to say too much about that. But I will never watch anime on Youtube/Crunchyroll, unless it's just a short snippet of it.

As for draconian ToS, that's pretty much a given almost anywhere. It's sad that site-users let themselves be screwed over by it, and I'm glad Facebook revised their ToS after that little brouhaha. It's absurd that service-providers think they can get away with such things, and personally I think there should be fair-use clauses in the legal system that allows people to contest such ToS.

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?

I first starting watching anime back when it was on the Sci-fi channel, a long time back. Then toonami/Adult Swim came along, and I started watching there. And fairly recently I've been downloading anime online.

Quote
2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)

I simply love BxT. From what I've seen, BxT has the largest selection of the highest quality anime available, all of which is well seeded. It doesn't get any better than that. Other alternatives are typically not as well-seeded or aren't seeded at all... and are of lesser quality.

Quote
3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?

The community here is great, as long as you're not an idiot and can read the rules/guidelines. Everyone is very helpful (usually :D)

Quote
4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?

I'm neither here nor there about it. It seems to work well, that's what matters.

Quote
5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?

If it was a monthly charge, or a small fee per download, yes. If it went beyond that, probably not :-\ Ads don't bother me at all.

Quote
6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?

I have not donated as of yet. When I'm not financially strapped for cash, I do intend to donate. I'd like this place to be around for a very long time, and I'd like to do my part to keep it running. But I'm always lurking around the recommendations board, giving my two cents on what I think they'd like. Recommending "School Days" to everyone is a blast. (Right Tatsu? ;))

Quote
8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?

I'd seriously cry. Even putting all the other places together doesn't match up to BxT. The loss of the people here and the amazingly well-seeded torrent selection would pretty much kill my desire to download anime online.

Quote
9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?

I used Crunchyroll to watch the first few episodes of Shangri-la a while back, but then stopped and decided to watch for the series to finish up first. I have not signed up to the site, nor do I intend to so I cannot comment on their ToS. But I don't have an issue with their subtitling practices.

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?
I started watching anime when it aired on TV, Transformers was extremely popular among my friends back in '94. I only started watching seriously in 2006/7, I think, when I discovered Ghost in the Shell (and subsequently fansubs).

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
BxT to me is practically all about the community, since I usually obtain torrents from other places so as not to ruin my ratio (an important thing here). However, it is an excellent place to find rare and old series which would be impossible to get anywhere else.

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?
I don't have many friends outside of the internet who watch anime (regardless of my efforts to convert them), so I enjoy being able to discuss anime-related things with like-minded people. Of course, that's not to say it's all I talk about.

One thing I really love about not just BxT, but the internet in general is the diversity of the people you meet. BxT is just lucky that most of the user base (in the forum at least) are not mouth breathing cretins.

4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?
I'm not sure what to say here.... I like the fact that it's an open user base, since this means there's always leeching going on, which is good for the actual members.

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?
I don't mind ads, but I would have to seriously consider my continued usage depending on the amount I'd have to pay. If it was less than my average cellphone bill, I'd probably pay.

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?
I have not donated. I would if I could. Yes.

7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?

I believe it is the same motivation that pushes uploaders to create torrents in the first place. At some level, it is for reputation, but it's also a way of spreading the love, so to speak.

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?
I would be pretty sad, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. I'd hope some of the staff would come together and jump start the community, but even if they didn't, I'd be able to move on.

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?
I've honestly never used Crunchyroll, since at this point it doesn't host any series that interest me. I've just read their ToS, and it seems quite restrictive, the part I don't agree with is where any uploaded content becomes theirs to modify and distribute without limitation (if I've read that right, it's the bit you call draconian?).

However, I feel that anyone who chooses to use a website should have read the ToS for themselves, and if they didn't and disagree with it later, well, that's their problem.

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime
basically Toonami/Adult Swim is what got me started.
Quote
2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
It is so damn easy.  Everything is packed nice and neatly in one torrent and you don't have to spend the time tracking down a subber, their irc channel, and messing with bots downloading an anime 24 times to get the whole thing.
Quote
3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?
overall pretty awesome.  However I don't belong to any other dedicated anime communities, so I can't compare.
Quote
4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?
I don't know.  If I had some statistics on the amount an unregistered user seeds I would probably be a bit more vocal.
Quote
5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?
I don't know about paid, but they used to have ads, so I don't see anything wrong with them
Quote
6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?
I have not, but I don't really have the money to spend.  So instead I help out by working with the subgroup and seeding
Quote
7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?
I would love to adopt torrents, but I just don't really have the ability to do it (IMO)
Quote
8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?
I would be pretty disappointed. at least 90% of my anime comes from here.  I probably would try my best to look for a service that is similar and then use that, or maybe just watch anime from the few group websites that i visit.
Quote
9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?
I don't know much about their ToS, but overall I think that Crunchyroll is on the right track.  HOWEVER I will not watch streamed anime until I can have a better quality.  The quality on Crunchyroll just makes me want to claw my eyes out.

Despite the fact I completely disagree with the entire premise of you paper I will answer.

Quote
1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?

Saw an ad for Neon Genesis Evangelion on SBS Thought it looked good sat down and watched the whole series, thoroughly enjoyed it, then completely forgot about it, it wasn't until a friend of my dad's visited for Christmas and got me the Death and Rebirth DVD that I remember anything about it and from there my collection grew into the monster it is today, I also discovered that some shows I watched earlier were also anime, like Techno-Man (Tekkamon Blade)

Quote
2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)

I can get the entire series in one (well seeded) place rather than hunting around the interwebs for a few scrap episodes here and there that are invariable poorly seeded.

Quote
3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?

I don't visit the forums much and post even less.

Quote
4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?

Good for seeders and leechers.

Quote
5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?

no, yes

Quote
6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?

no, Credit card, I have uploaded two torrents. I don't view it as "instead of" but separate too financial aid.

Quote
7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?

N/A to adopting (though have thought about it.) have uploaded.

Quote
8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?

Most of my anime comes from here, if it disappeared it would simply mean I have less anime and are less up to date with "must have" anime. (oh and my hentai would be non-existant)

Quote
9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?

Never heard of it. Also putting "draconian" in your question shows bias, something I wouldn't expect a 3rd year law student writing a thesis to do.

#1 - I didn't ask whether you agreed with my paper or not.  If you don't agree with it, don't answer.
#2 - If you don't know anything about Crunchyroll and their terms of service for guest subtitling, how would you know whether or not I am being biased?
#3 - Do you even know anything about American law schools?  Australia is a common law system, quite different...

I'm all for discourse.  What I'm not for is drive-by flamers.

  Thanks!

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime
My brother got me hooked a couple of years back, gave me a bunch of DVDs, started with Naruto and Bleach, and then I found out of even more interesting titles...

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
It's convenient, the community is great - and basically that the best version available is packed nice and neat in one usually well seeded torrent.
Quote
3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?
Overall - pretty awesome. <33
Quote
4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?
I like the fact it's a semi-private tracker. That way you can reap the benefits of both - members get a chance to have a good ratio by the income of leechers, and get to experience the benefits of being users or power-users.

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?
Site used to have ads, I wouldn't mind it if they were in small amount, but if it were a paid service, even as much as I'd like too, I'd be prevented from using it because of a lot of issues beside financial...

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?
I can't donate money, but I contribute by donating my time to help improve the community in help sections, wiki, irc, offer pages, adoptions etc.

7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?
The fact that I came across of a live-action series I loved and owned already got me to participate in "winter cleaning" - and basically if I have it and like it, I'll adopt it and fix it up if it needs my help...

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?
I would be very disappointed. I probably would try my best to look for a service that is similar and then use that, but it would make it less convenient to find and download completed series for sure...

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?
I very rarely use online anime streaming services so I have no opinion on Crunchyroll whatsoever.

I'll give this a shot

USER QUESTIONNAIRE: BxT

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?
  • Got hooked as at 14 years old on DBZ

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)

  • To figure out more about Anime.  To learn and help out others.  It is also good for finding hard to find series to download at fast speeds.  I'm more of a seeder here than a leecher.  I leech directly from the group, seed it back a few times, then seed it on box.

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?

  • It is a great place, and friendly to boot.  You can learn a lot if you keep your ears open

4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?

  • doesn't bother me at all, i'm a power user, and as long as i keep my good ratio i'm happy.

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?

  • Paid no, ads, probably use it a lot less than I do now

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?

  • not monitarily, but in the form of seeding yes.  And I would help in any way possible to help build the community on my constrained time table.  A man's got to work you know.

7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?

  • Never adopted, but if i was a little better with HTML and had the time i would

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?

  • I wouldn't be happy but i would understand if it disbanded.  A good thing can't last forever.  And I would probably just do what i use to do before box, and just keep my eyes on groups I like

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?

  • doesnt' bother me at all.  I think they did a smart thing to partner with anime companies.  I
don't blame them, and i think it is a good thing, and will help promote the newest anime to people who use thier service.
I have typed these words and you have been forced to read them.  Now you can go cry in the corner if you like :)

Enjoy the reading ;D
USER QUESTIONNAIRE: BxT

1. What is your back story?  How did you get into anime?
- Loved watching DBZ as a child, didn't realize it was anime, started learning Japanese in highschool, saw 'Bleach' on Adult Swim, have been hooked ever since.

2. Why do you use BxT?  What do you like about it? (as a standalone community, but also – what do you like about it better than using alternative sites to obtain torrents?)
- Everything has strict rules on BoxT. This can be hard at times and even a bit scary, but it also means you get top-of-the-line anime with the best quality. When you make a download here, you can be confident that you are getting a certain video quality, sound quality, and sub quality according to what is written in the Torrent description. Almost all other sites refuse to give all the specs, and you are often left to guess if you will be getting a piece of garbage video taped from a television with fake subs, a great anime, or a virus. The users on BoxT are always active and commenting about everything so anything not mentioned, or stated incorrectly in descriptions are usually talked about in the comment section. This means there is NEVER a question in your mind about what you are getting here.

3. What are your feelings concerning the online community of BxT?
- Well, there are all sorts of users that come to this site. Probably about half of them are scared away or just banned for being idiots. 40% of the community enjoys flaming those idiots in comments and on the forums. 5% of the users are just having themselves a good time, and the remaining 5% are lurking in the shadows on the site while sitting in a dark basement yelling at their mothers to make them dinner :D. Overall the community that sticks around, doesn't lurk, and keeps the flaming only to the complete idiots are pretty cool and fun to talk with.

4. What is your personal view of the fact that BxT operates simultaneously as a public and private tracker?
- So many people don't realize that they even are a public tracker. They come, assume they need to register, then wonder why they get into trouble for leeching like madmen (never reading the wiki or glancing over at the "BoxT is a public tracker" that is written on the main page). Honestly, if you are here just to leech a few anime then take off then don't bother registering.
-  I sort of wish that BoxT was specifically a private tracker, but as much as people seed the torrents on BoxT, if the random non-registered leechers disappeared we might never be able to hit the ratios we want/need.

5. Would you still use BxT if it was a either: a paid service, or the site contained ads?
- I don't care about ads as long as the site was still trusted and respectable. I probably would never have even tried BoxT if it were a pay site. Having used the site for so long now, if I had the funds I would probably pay a membership fee or whatever since it is so convenient and reliable; however, I don't really download enough to justify paying money every month just to write things people will never read in the forums.

6. Have you donated to BxT? Would you donate if you could?  Would/Do you choose to donate your time to helping build the community of BxT as a way to contribute instead, if you don’t have the financial means to donate?
- I have donated $100 to date. Mostly I just needed the upload bonus at the time after being unable to seed in a dorm room for a year. I don't download enough to be able to offer anything to BoxT as an upload or to adopt anything that I own that someone else hasn't already nabbed. I do try to answer questions in Torrent comments and the forums as much as possible, but this is just because I have too much time and nothing to do with it. If I wasn't having some financial troubles right now I would probably be donating some more just to support the site.

7. To Adopters of torrents – What motivated you to do this?
[N/A]

8. If BxT were to disappear, how would that make you feel?  What would you do to replace the service and community that you lost?
- Well, my downloading would come to an abrupt halt, but my internet would run a lot faster without the nonstop, all day every day seeding. I would probably just latch on to another anime site. It wouldn't be as good and I would always get a tear in my eye when remembering how awesome BoxT was, but losing this site would not cause me to emotionally break down, repent for ever downloading, and swear off technology and anime forever.

9. How do you feel about Crunchyroll?  If you are familiar with Crunchyroll’s draconian Terms of Service in relation to user donated subtitling services, what are your thoughts on that?
-  Never used it. Not sure how it works exactly, I assume something like youtube for anime specifically, but watching anime through services like this you always end up with lower quality everything, questionable subs, a lot of downloading time every time you want to watch an episode of something, and you lose the ability to work with the video in your own video or picture editors. The biggest thing for me is the loading times. When I am in the mood to watch some anime, I want to be able to click and have it playing flawlessly on my screen. With things like crunchyroll, when you are in the mood to watch an episode you have to click and either hope your internet is fast enough to keep up with the video or deal with buffering times. I like the idea of the actual American anime licensing companies starting to play their anime online for free and offering them through paid downloads. It's not perfect, but I feel it's a step in the right direction. Heck, I would probably even live through well timed commercials in my downloaded anime if it were free and legal.

Wow, now I know how it must feel to be a staff member of BoxTorrents, one flamer and I'm already tired.

Simply because someone disagrees with you does not make them a "flamer"

I decided to make a questionnaire specifically targeted towards users of BxT - if any would like to voice their opinion.

So I did.

#1 The question was aimed at "Users of Bxt" of which I am one, if you choose not to use my answers then that is entirely your prerogative.

#2 The word "Draconian" means "unjustly harsh or severe" and since "just" and "justice" are a matter of opinion it shows a bias, not necessarily a "positive" or "negative" bias, but bias none-the-less

#3 No, why would I?
