One Piece
« on: June 19, 2009, 05:37:44 PM »
Okay, honestly... my cousin thinks One Piece is one of the best series out there... although that isn't saying much because he hasn't seen a lot of anime anyways.

I've seen a few episodes and I think it's okay at best. I mean it's not as bad as some of the other series that have a ton of episodes, but really with the episodes I've seen it's okay at best... it is a bit intriguing, but it doesn't make me want to watch it from the beginning at all.

So what are your opinions of it?
BTW I've seen a few eps from about 1-270 and I kind of know the story (he's my room mate or else I wouldn't be watching it at all lol). But I mean after those eps does it get any better?

I haven't met a single person who has watched one piece from the beggining (till about the 50s), that didn't get completely hooked ^^

One of the MANY things that draws me to one piece is that in most series there is a main character and all the other characters depend on or end up being useless one way or the other. In one piece every character from the crew has a purpose and I <3 them all  :D. I'm fascinated how the writer can keep a series more interesting then ever after 400+ eps.

One of interesting things about the One Piece anime is that it is pretty low on the filler count compared to a lot of other long going shounens based on manga. It does have a few, that and specials...

It is a good series, any series with several hundred episodes is good, but it can't stay awesome for everybody for all that time. It has ups and downs for different people, some might like the slower parts with lots of backgrounds, while others just want back to the action. :)

Yeah, I guess I find the slow parts a bit annoying... not just the parts with no action, but also how long it takes for them to accomplish something (i.e. rescuing a certain someone from the CP9)

It has taken the throne as my favorite show.  There are one or two gripes I have but every show does.  It is laugh out loud funny and low on filler as Sosseres mentioned.  I enjoy the comedy the most and there's plenty of it, the same gags still make me lol.  I will say it takes a while to get going because all the personalities are not yet assembled but when they do, the real joy of the show comes forth.  I am at 203 and I still can't get enough!

*Spoiler*  (Where is the spoiler button?)

Only setup I did not care for too much was Enel and Skypiea.  Took too long and a bunch of annoyances.

I haven't seen the anime, but I've read all of the manga that's out, and I must say, One Piece is fucking awesome... All the characters have deep and unique personalities, and doesn't depend on the main character, they all have their own moment of awesomeness in nearly every major fight...

There's a lot of character development too... And the action is just awesome, it keeps getting better and better... And the humor... Priceless!

The story is also very good. There're lots of plot twists and a perfect mix between action, comedy and drama...

One Piece is my favorite manga, and I hope it never ends...

I have to disagree with a lot of character development. Only one or two has developed as characters since the start time of the manga. Earning new abilities doesn't count...

They do have strong personalities so it isn't a bad thing, they all have backgrounds that scarred them in some way and locked them to a certain degree. All except that one that does go through development. :)

I actually meant "strong character development", not "lots of"...

My bad... ^^

If you compare it to the other long running shounen shows, it easily takes the throne.

Of course it's not the best thing ever,  but if you don't go off expecting something like that, it will be very entertaining.
Also it's something that starts growing on you after lots of episodes, since, already judgeable by the amout of them, you can't expect any development in just a few episodes.

Of course if you deny action packed shounen by default, it'll be very hard to get into, as that's what you'll get to see most of the time.

One Piece is my favorite manga, and I hope it never ends...
oh please no.

Well, I ended up giving it a "Meh." score because I guess I'm just really not into animes with over 100 eps... they just take soo long to do anything and then there's the fillers... lol. Nonetheless, I can see that this anime is one of the best, if not the best in that category, but it really isn't my type.

Either way, if I were to watch an anime with over 100 eps it would have to be One Piece.. although chances are I probably won't any time soon.

If I was to recommend One Piece to a friend, I would flat out tell them to read the manga.  Ive attempted to watch the anime a few times, and I just cant do it.  I enjoyed watching the Water 7 arc and the lobby raid.  Read the manga, ignore the anime.

Watch Legend of the Galatic Heroes, that is over 100 episodes and very very solid.

Other than that only Slam Dunk and Touch (both better in manga version) are something you would miss in ignoring 100+ episode series. There are several other good ones above 100, but nothing you would really miss out by not watching.

I really wasn't impressed with the series.  I watched about 60 episodes, but I could never get into it.  It didn't draw me in.  The Character developement was pretty good I do have to say, but the whole plot, just wasn't my cup of tea.
I have typed these words and you have been forced to read them.  Now you can go cry in the corner if you like :)

I have a strong dislike for this genre but One Piece easily became one of my favorite shows due to the setting and character attitudes. The main character is likable, he's funny, doesn't go emo/angsty,  he's moronic, and you can't tell whether he's brave or just plain stupid. The other supporting characters have personalities and backstories. The setting is nice, it's an open world of pirates & government lot's of things can happen and the series doesn't need to go the cliche' way of having "another world" where these beings come from.

And I think I'm one of the few people that actually likes the art in One Piece, I love it because it look's really neat and a change to all the pretty boy shows. Anyways the show is obviously isn't for everyone, the sheer amount of episodes is enough to drive people away (up to 406-407 now I think) but if you wanna try it out and see then watch it until the end of Arlong arc and see if you liked it. If you disliked it then stop watching, but if you did like it keep on watching.

I thought that it was okay, of course I've only watched the first 10 or so episodes.

I've seen quite a bit on and off like up until luffy fights this sand croc guy.

Can anyone tell me what episode this is or which episode is a good starting point to watch? I don't really feel like watching repeats or watching it from the beginning unless its ungodly amazing, which I don't think it is.
