Really, the difference negligible though, unless you really can't muster up the strength required for a right-click.

As for Linux, I too would recommend it over Windows, but it actually has less media playback options in its arsenal than OS X does. Every video player on Linux ranging from Xine to Mplayer to VLC and all the various UIs for them are based on FFMPEG, meaning if you have playback problems on one player, there's a very good chance that all the other players will experience the same problems. The only exception to this rule is VLC, since it progressively plays files instead of opening the entire file and then playing it (handy for viewing corrupted or incomplete videos).

what it comes down to is windows is the most versatile of the 3 choices but has your standard windows quirks. Linux is free but its linux it can be very easy or very difficult to use depending on what you wish to do with it.
Mac is mac its going to cost you more money plain and simple.
You dont get much more functionality or usefulness just the rouge that comes along with drinking the mac koolaid.

Will you get a bunch of free software with your mac ? yea sure.

Could you spend 30 seconds on demonoid or piratebay or torrentspy or any other torrent site and find a equivalent or superior product yes.

Honestly I was just being a fanboy smart ass about the linux thing.... ^^
Though I do really think that anyone can get use to it.

MKV external file references haven't worked for me at all with Perian, sadly.
