I meant that those who put "what's anime" on the polls are being sarcastic.

Honestly speaking, I have no run into a file that I could not open with linux so I can't understand the "Mac is better than linux for media". I would personally rank them exactly the same. (neither are superior) sure, you might have to dl a codec, but it does it right away at the interface like an update. So it's not much of an issue.

If you want to nickpick though... ogg work fine.

MKV external file references haven't worked for me at all with Perian, sadly.

They work fine for me in MPlayer OSX

I just use VLC (although I do have Perian installed) on my 24" iMac. It even works with the Apple Remote that came with the computer (it's great being able to sit across the room and fast-forward/rewind if I have to).

I have yet to run into an anime I couldn't play on this thing.

Which binary are you using? I'm using rev11 of MPlayer Extended and external reference files don't work for me (PSNR's Planetes, the ED won't load))

Nanonanol:
I would avoid Windows Vista like the plague ... Windows 7 RC seems a bit better, but I'd stick with XP if you are comfortable switching over to Linux. (As a matter of fact, I would also avoid Macs as well, simply because I find them to be incredibly overpriced compared to PCs - remember not to get off topic and start a Mac vs. PC war guys :)

But as far as the Linux goes, depending on what distro you use, setting up a media player to watch anime can be a pain in the ass, or easy as hell. If you take something like Linux Mint, you can just throw your video file at Totem, or Mplayer right after the installation.

I'd also recommend looking into XBMC for Windows, Linux, or Mac - it kicks total ass when you have a collection of video files.
