Wikipedia gives a list of players for NSV. Couldn't tell you how well, but it says MPlayer supports it, among some others. RMVB seems less optimal if you're not using Windows (and RealPlayer in particular) although I dunno how common it is as a format.

mPlayer doesn't work. I've tried. But even if it did, I presume it still is somewhat crippled like VLC versus winamp. (You can't seek in VLC)
