http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/media-center.aspx is designed to be able to use a remote on.

AFAIK, if we're talking just the OS, windows wins hands down due to stupid file formats such as rmvb or nsv(which only works in winamp properly and works in VLC but is horribly crippled)
Wikipedia gives a list of players for NSV. Couldn't tell you how well, but it says MPlayer supports it, among some others. RMVB seems less optimal if you're not using Windows (and RealPlayer in particular) although I dunno how common it is as a format.

mPlayer doesn't work. I've tried. But even if it did, I presume it still is somewhat crippled like VLC versus winamp. (You can't seek in VLC)

Nope, really didn't have a clue. Only knew about the mac remote because the one my boyfriend gave me has one.
