Thanks all for the comments. The thing is, I have a 19" 5:4 monitor and my vision is far from good. Maybe that's why I tend to use large fonts. I'll try with 35-40 and post the results later.

What happened to old fashion pen and paper plus timing from scratch?
That takes way too much time, time that I don't have. I prefer doing something more simple and finish it in a reasonable amount of time, than doing everything from scratch and take years just to do one series. Also it seems no one is going to finish Air any time soon.
Go with contacts. Also, you can add two different font settings. One with the large fonts and the other with the smaller fonts. The more options you have the better off people would like you. If you've got the money go dip around 160-180 dollars to get a 1920x1080 (p) Monitor. They're extremely good and cheap now.

Daiz of Underwater made a nice post about styling. It's worth reading. You can find it here

EDIT: I've been thinking about why some groups (e.g. THORA) don't release FLAC audio. I posted earlier that it has something to do with playback. It looks like there are problems with the combination of FLAC, matroska and ordered chapters. Can anyone confirm this? Chihiro released in FLAC but not in ordered chapters when they released the TV version with those. THORA released with ordered chapters and but no FLAC audio. Reading the comments from Norikumi's Mouryo no Hako seems to agree with this. I haven't seen any bluray rip that combined ordered chapters and FLAC.

Chihiro's Hatsukoi Limited and Coalgirls's Tayutama are Ordered chapters + FLAC.

I pity Kristen over one thing ... which I can't say. It's not related to her group or fansubbing at all. I'm sure she knows what it is. ._.;; *Coughs*.

I'd prefer if they'd just mux in th AC3 or DTS audio instead.

It's not a matter of muxing. BDs come with linear raw PCM audio. Thora and other groups doing AC3 are encoding that to AC3. That's why Thora's bitrate in 384 kbps and not 448 kbps like DVD AC3s extract to.

With an uncompressed audio file, it's a matter of muxing it in uncompressed, converting to lossless, or encoding to lossy.

Contacts? What do you mean with contacts? I like the idea of two font settings. But, for now, I reduced the font to 60 and 50 for songs (any lower it's just too small for me), darkened that blue a bit and set a vertical margin of 25. I watched the last episode (2 meters from the monitor) like that and it was nice. The font, size and placement are fine for me. I have the OP and ED left and it's done. I've already done all the checking. If someone still doesn't like the fonts feel free to change them or do whatever you like with them, just tell me, I want to know what you'll do :). There are only three files (for the three volumes) so it shouldn't take much work.

Just trust me and put the font size at 30 or 25, your monitor's resolution/aspect ratio/size is different and I'm pretty sure most of us want to enjoy the video more than the karaoke.

Seriously, 25-30 is too small since we are in the blu-ray thread. For a DVD it might work, but this is a bit higher unless I misunderstand things.

:D
I use regular glasses and I don't have a problem with them ^^

Do you like it now?

I find everything readable 2 meters from the monitor.

I'm done with volume 1. Tomorrow I'll finish the other two.

I'd say that they're at their limit of how big they should be. It's a good font for TV-viewing, though I personally prefer smaller fonts for PC-viewing.

Blue and red don't go well together in the same image in my opinion. I'd suggest two colours closer to one another. But whatever floats your boat, I guess. I'm also not too sure about the image quality. It seems a bit low to me, though the screenshots are taken in 1280xN. Perhaps the source ain't too good. Is it going to be a 720p encode?

Seriously, 25-30 is too small since we are in the blu-ray thread. For a DVD it might work, but this is a bit higher unless I misunderstand things.

A HD image is larger than an SD image, so the font should be relatively smaller than the image itself. However, in a non-relative matter of speaking, the font size should be the same in every image, HD or SD. In the end it's just a matter of whether something is played in the native resolution or not.

Take your screenshots properly, we won't know how good it is until its taken in its native resolution.

When I last posted, there weren't any screenshots visible, so I was just going off past experiences on criticizing white+ light blue borders. Fortunately in this case, the simple font and shadows salvage things. Overall, I have no problem with the main fonts and OP/ED as they appear in the screenshots. Size is good, styles are good, and again the shadows go a long way in making the serifed OP/ED subs readable. That styling guide Lupin linked is a great read, you may want to check the overscan mask as they suggest. Also, ++massive points for leaving that "walk you to school" line broken up into 2 rows as they were on the DVD, instead of making 1 long line across the whole bottom of the screen. DVDs do that for a reason, to keep subs in the center and minimize side-to-side eye-scanning.

As Dagger said, the red does seem a little off in that insert-song scene. Maybe do a white + black outline there? Since that's a "neutral" combination if nothing else. Also, the font for the insert song seems a little... idk... "too silly" for the scene? That font (Kirsten ITC, iirc) feels more like something you'd see in a show like Happy Lesson or Akikan. Using the same style as the main subs would work, with a "closer" color and maybe italicizing to differentiate it from the dialogue.

I should state that I don't have a huge monitor (1152x860 4:3) and I don't often watch HDTV/BD files. So maybe I'm not the best judge of size in this case. But imho it's better to err on the side of being big enough for imperfect vision / smaller displays / longer viewing distance.

Sidenote: DaggerLite, are you the same "Dagger" in Dagger & Desbreko?

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

I would prefer if there was Japanese Kanji/Kana for songs, but that's just me.

I think he's doing it alone.

I honestly need some help to learn how to encode. I don't understand all these codes, specifically ... how to find them FIRST and then properly use them.

Use a second set of fonts with lower sizes. Because your doing this for fans so you have to please the fans then yourself. Are you going to do two sets of font sizes?

Well, with that size on the font he's clearly intending to make it work on his monitor, since they are too large for native resolution. While I can sympathize with the sentiment, fonts should match the native resolution of the video, and if that is a problem then a second set of subtitles for lower resolutions may be an option. Kanji/kana seem like a lot of extra work though, unless they can be ripped.
